Question "98 Expy Bug Shield question

Hey kids,

The OEM bug shield (smoked color) on my "98 Expy is showing it's age, discolored and looking ratty. I'd like to replace it. I've checked out eBay for a new OEM one, but they seem to be going for some serious $$$ . I think the bidding gets out of hand anyway and drives the prices waaaayyyyy up. Anyway, as much as I'd like a new Ford OEM one, who else makes the same quality bug shield as the OEM ones? I've seen shields that you could snap in two by just pulling up on the corners, want to avoid that if I can! Anyone sell the OEM ones reasonabley priced? Any and all suggestions most welcome! Tim

PS, how do I find the Ford OEM part number for the bug shield I have on the truck now?

Well to be frank about it, there is no OEM bug shield. Why? Because no vehicle comes from the assembly plant with one. They are all dealer installed. The dealer may install one out of a box with a Ford label on it, which is sold thru the Ford accessory catalog, and is simply a Ford approved accessory. You can also find dealers selling thier own brands procured from many aftermarket vendors. There are many aftermarket retailers around your area or on the net. I would just shop around your local area first and look at the various ones avaliable. Then stop by your local Ford dealer and compare thiers along with price. You might just find an aftermarket shield that is just as sturdy and competitively priced.

Also remember, you typically get what you pay for.

I've had 4 shields from Ford on all four of my Expys (97, 99, 2000, 2004) and never had one break. They all seen car washes and the 99 Expy was destroyed in a tornado in Janesville Wisconsin but the shield came through A-OK.

You can get them at the dealer. I get 10% off parts from the dealer I bought my truck at. I think it was around 70$. Well worth it.

Bought the Bug Shield

I bought the bug shield today on Ebay. It's the OEM Ford one that I wanted. I used the "buy it now" function and got it for $35 and $14 shipping, not too bad for a shield that sells for over $70 on most web sites, not including shipping. The local dealer didn't have one for my year, but he did have some for '02 & '03's. Boy, was the old one a pain to get off! I finally got to wax the part of the hood that I couldn't get to before because of the bug shield, it sure needed a coat of wax! I see now why they installed the bug shield. It looks like the previous owner (leased) had tied a rope over the top of the Expy to tie down something on the roof. The rope had just about rubbed the paint off a 3x3 inch section of the hood in the dead center area. The new shield will again cover it up, but I may need to do a little touch-up with some paint. Some people...
