Question Rear Diff.

Hey all, I'm new to the forum and have few questions. I have a 97 F 250 with a manual 5 speed trans. Two problems I have been having lately is a leak coming from the rear diff. cover and my shifter popping out of overdrive.

I plan on doing a diff. fluid change tomorrow and will replace the cover and gasket but I don't know how much or what kind of fluid to put back in? The shifter problem just started and I have no idea what is causing that. It only does it in overdirve (5th gear) so I have to hold it in when I am on the freeway...any ideas?

Thanks for any input, Mike

Welcome to FTE!

The diff should be filled up to the filler hole on level ground, probably 3 qts, I'm not 100% sure. If you have two questions like that that are not totally related, make a separate thread for them each (you'll get a better response and it keeps the site more organized) .

To add to what Justin said about the rear diff fluid... you can use your choice of gear oil (90wt or multi weight). If you have a rear limited slip (Trac Lock) differential, go to the Ford dealer and get the little bottle of friction modifier additive and pour in the whole bottle with the gear oil. It keeps the diff clutches lubed and the diff working properly.

More than likely you have the Sterling 10.25"

To get the ratio, look at the long narrow tag that is bolted to your inspection cover on the differential.
It should look like, for example:
410 or 4L10

Ok here is what I got off of the tags. one said: S 114 A 731027E06 the other said 5w140 synth oil only. I don't understand any of it and to top it all off I have no idea where to fill the diff back up once I drain the fluid and put on a new cover. I couldn't find a rubber plug or drain bolt and did not see any place on top to pur the new stuff in.

It's a 4.6L V8 1997 F-250 4x4. Any help will definitely be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

Ok, you must have the new body style light duty F250 then, since you have the 4.6L engine? That rear axle most likely is something other than the Ford Sterling 10.25", but I don't know exactly which one. Maybe a Ford 9.75"? The 5w140 synth only is the oil you want to use then in that axle. On my friend's SuperCrew, the fill plug is a female 3/8" square drive plug in the front upper left side of the axle housing. You can see it if you crawl under the truck from the side ahead of the rear wheel and look at the side of the housing behind the pinion yoke and above and slightly ahead of the axle tube. My other friend with an Explorer described his fill plug in a similar place. You loosen it with the end of a 3/8" ratchet or extension.
