need some help here, I just pulled what I was told is a 390 FE out of my '76 f250, the only casting number I can find on the block anywhere is D4TE - at least that's what it looks like.
The only other casting numbers I found were the exhaust manifolds - D2TE 9430 AA
and the intake manifold - C9AE 9425 B
couldn't find head casting numbers
can anyone give me any idea of what engine I'm looking at? gotta know what I've got before I can start building it.
no stickers on the valve cover? thats where they put most of em. you could prolly tell what engine it is from the exhaust manifold number. The 360 manifolds a slightly different from the 390, which I have in mine. Friend has a 360 junker that i took some parts off to fix my 390. there are alot of parts that are interchangable with the 2 motors.
there's no stickers anywhere, I'm pretty sure it's a 390, cuz I ran the vehicle VIN and it came back saying it was a 390, but I just want to get additional confirmation before I start ordering parts.
I just found a website that said my d4te block casting number indicates a FT391 engine...can anyone confirm? what kind of aftermarket parts are available for the 391? are they the same as the 390? similar?

I wish I could remember the site, I found it thru a google search, I'll try to find it again. as for the casting numbers... www.butlers-a1.com/fordm.htm
that's the link that said my block was a 391 block. it has block, head, and crank casting numbers listed.

You have to keep in mind that just because some one posted those casting #'s doesn't mean they knew for a fact that was what Ford did with that particular block. Just pull a spark plug and using a wood dowel, insert it into the hole, then rotate the crank by hand ( breaker bar and 15/16 socket) till the dowel comes out to it's highest point. Mark the dowel where it's next to any handy reference point. Then rotate the crank again til it's at it's lowest point. Mark the dowel again, then measure the distance between the two points, this will give you a pretty good indication of the stroke.
a D4TE block can either be a 390 or 391, and like BB says your intake and exhaust #'s come back to be either a 360/390. just about all parts are interchangeable between the 360/390 just the stroke, rods and some pistons were different.
I've got the engine out of the truck, pulled the heads/intake off, stroke measures about 3.75. block is in really good shape, should have the pan off and pulled the rotating assembly by wednesday, depends on how much time I have to work on it. I should be sending it to a machine shop within another month to be bored .030 over, have the oil mods done, and be ready to rebuild. planning on using a .030 overbore 410 rotating assembly with a hydraulic roller cam, edelbrock heads, and a dual 4bbl intake
