I have a stock electronic ignition distributor in my 360 now. I was wondering if I should use this same distributor in the 428 I am building? I have read some of the upgrades after searching and have found that using the large flat cap and heavy wires may be a good place to begin with. I also have an older points style dizzy, if this would be better. I don't have the cash right now to purchase a complete high dollar ignition system so what are some other upgrades that I can do?
Oh yeah almost forgot---this is going in a 76 F250 automatic fulltime 4X4. My daily driving, sometimes pulling an 18' camper, hunting and fishing pickup.
The elec. dizzy would be my choice, but you will need to spend some time recurving it for the 428. Get a high quality hi-output coil that is compatible with whatever ignition you are going to use and use premium plug wires.
Recurving? OK i did a search and found out what it was....Now who do I take it to, to have it done. this sounds way beyond me. I have the dizzy from the 428 (points) and the dizzy from the 360 (elec) can i just open both of them up and swap the springs and weights? Or if they are the same just leave it alone?
You don't HAVE to recurve that dist for a 428, It MIGHT be nice to do it, and MIGHT make a difference, but for all intents and purposes, it will work just fine as is. If you happen to decide to recurve it down the road, then by all means do it, but don't expect earth moving differences between the way it'll run now as opposed to what it may do afterward.
76Full, you already have, with the duraspark dizzy, what I think is the best available for your FE. The points dizzy is no help. Use the 360's duraspark dizzy, but upgrade to some nicer wires and a fresh coil, you'll do just fine. FWIW, my better performing truck has a Jacobs computer ignition, but I'm using a factory duraspark distributer to trigger it. DF, @ his Dad's
