Vibration at 70-80 MPH

I have noticed I have a vibration while driving at speeds from 70 - 85mph. I went to get my tires balanced at rotated. Torqued wheels at 160.

Anyone have this problem or know what I can do to eliminate?

Thanks

I think the proper torque is in the 148-152 range...
but other than that u should be good...
can u isolate it to a "part" of the truck...
front back >>>>

could be tire cupping from the poor stock shocks...

the last time i had my wheels balanced i had looked at all of the tires and the number of wieghts on them( i was suprised how many there were). the next time i was on the highway it was still shaking some, when i got home i looked agian at the wheels and i had lost 4 or 5 wieghts. it sounds like it is still a balance problem.i would take it back and tell them it is still shaking. if you feel the vibration in the steering wheel it is the front tires, if you feel it in the seat of your pants or if you look at the passenger seat and it is shaking it is in the rear.

What angle did you end up with on the driveshaft?? I know it was angled up, but what degree is the rear shaft at now?? I have a similar problem

Not sure of the angle. I just know that we had to insert a shimmey to turn the rear end front u-joint up a bit. It took forevever for Ford to figure out this was the problem. See the following text which was taken from 3 exerpts at http://fordexcursions.superford.org/forums/index.php
At the web site do a search for vibration or humming.

From FordExcursions.com Forum (3 exerpts)

My 2003 V-10 had the same vibration above 70 to 75 MPH then got louder and louder as the speed increased. I line up the rear axle flange and the flange on the rear end of the driveshaft by tipping the front of the axle housing up.(Took out the misalignment in the U-joint). It took a 1/4 inch shim at the rear of the cast iron spacer above the spring.

It's not a matter of replacing u-joints. It is a matter of getting them in matching angles so that the orbital revolution of the u-joints conteract each other at both ends of the drive shaft and give you a smooth ride. Obviously you don't want to mess with the transfer case output, so you shim the rear springs with steel shims to make the rear differential u-joint match the front u-joint operating angle. If this does not work then you will have to go with a double carden shaft. The link is somewhere in one of my posts. I can't find it right now.

Thanks to this forum my 03 X's vibration in the 75 to 78 + MPH range is now gone. This forum provided the source of the problem and I have fixed it. I torqued lugs to 150 ft lbs. - much improved!! Next I rotated the rear axle (tipped front end up) to square up the driveshaft/u-joint/axle input shaft centerlines. It took a 1/4 inch shim at the rear of the riser block. I did not re-balance the Driveshaft. Drive line is as smooth as silk.
