Weird Vibration

Okay guys, had a long trip with the X this week and noticed a weird vibration up at speed. Anything before 65 mph and the truck was smooth, higher than that a medium vibration developed. Its frequency increased with speed. Never got the truck over 70, but the vibration was there enough to rattle change in the cup holder and the rear view mirror. Any clues what it might be? I was thinking a hub bearing, but really dont have a clue and would love any help you guys might be able to give me. Thanks.

I have the same vibration at 70 -75 MPH. I have balanced rotated my tires serveral times trying to figure it out. I am thinking it must be in the driveline. I am going to take out my driveshaft and inspect it.

Suffered speed dependent vibrations in my X for a long time and finally confirmed it in the drive shaft as mainly a slip yoke play issue, but got worse with an increase in lift heigth. Finally ended up building a new driveshaft with CV joint in an solved my issues.

Did you build it or have someone do it for you? Cost? Mine is getting worse, shakes the water bottle in the cup holder now.

Yep mine progressively worsened and even after balancing the drive shaft, it did not improve. Finally took it to a driveshaft shop and replaced the slip-yoke 1st and took out all the low speed vibration but still had some at high speed so went back with the double joint and is running smooth and vibration free at all speeds now.

I had a front end vibration when going over 65 mph with my X that progressively worsened the faster I went.

After replacing all 4 steering tie rods the vibration is gone. All the way up to 95 mph!

I had the same problem, vibration at 65 but only when it was under power. It was the rear u-joint, one of the caps had broken. $15 part and $40 to install, no more vibration.

I just experienced this when driving home tonight, was rattling the cup holder. I climbed under the truck when I got home and didnt notice any play in the u-joints. I could however move the t-case up and down a bit. Wondering if the rear trans mount is going. The rubber looks intact.

Not trying to derail, but I figure who's posting by their avatar. I was very confused at first because markland and douglash have very similar avatars

Not sure if you solved this or not... I had a similar vibration and noticed that when making a hard turn I felt some grabbing. Turned out the front right manual hub froze in the 4wd position. Replaced and now all is good up to 80 cruising speed.

My u-joint problem wasn't obvious until the drive shaft was out from under the Ex. My mechanic tried to turn the drive shaft and had doubts. It was a cheap enough repair, I told him to go ahead and replace it anyway. When he removed the drive shaft one of the broken caps fell off.
