I had a new roof put on my house and the roofer had a Dodge Cummins Diesel, dually, four wheel drive. He had this heavy tandem trailer with a load of scrap shingles, in my drive way. When he hooked up to it, it started to drag him down hill backwards. He got it stopped but could not get going again. Chained up my F-250 Diesel, put in in regular 4 wheel. He said it wouldn't work. He said if his Dodge/Cummins couldn't do it, my "woosie" PowerStroke did not stand a chance. He had been making fun of my truck for a week. I pulled him, and the trailer all the way up the hill! Even funnier, the all Mexican work crew was giving me Hi 5’s after when I said, this truck “heche in Mexico”. My roofer said, “you’re really enjoying this, aren't you!” My only regret, no picture!
Went to a tractor pull and a 2000 Dodge 3500 regular cab had the biggest turbo i ever saw, 6" pipe coming out the bed and propane injection! He pulled the sled 270 feet and a BONE STOCK 2002 F-350 STRAIGHT FROM THE FACTORY WENT 265 FEET!He might not have won but he had more than $15,000 less in his truck.
Typical Dodge POS the Cummins is so over rated people figure they can pull the whole world with it but its a puny damn little motor what do you expect. When they first came out in Dodge they were rated at a whopping 160 horsepower and now Crummins is claiming 220 or something like that with 500 ftlbs or torque. You can see why tow truck operators don't buy Dodge trucks as tow trucks they are JUNK every tow truck you see is either a Ford or a Chev.
I would have laughed so damn hard if I seen that happened its just proves how beeping stupid a Dodge guy is it must have put him in his place. It would have been real funny if he hurt himself and a PSD powered ambulance would have come and picked him up it would have really added salt to the wound.
Another one for Ford you wonder why you never see a Dodge Cummins used as a serious work truck thats why the proof was right infront of your eyes.
I'll throw my $.02 in.... Buddy had a 3500 extra cab dually. Everybody thought it was just the baddest truck in town. I said it was a joke and they called me jelous. I said Dodge and that Cummins were around ten years behind FORD. Then one day they came to pick up a little 525 John Deere lawn mower....it weighs maybe 900 lbs. to take up the road a piece. They pulled it on a little 16'tandem flatbed. When he got back he asked me how to tune up that Cummins. Said it would only pull that trailer 70 mph. After I laughed my @#$@# off, told him "I told you that Cummins/Dodge was a piece of @&$#$@#". After that he was all Ford, and now that Dodge has gone to a new owner and he is looking for a PSD dually and is asking my advice every day!
Just to confirm the towing power of these trucks... as if I need too... I pulled 14000 lbs of boat and trailer... up hill... on wet ground/grass in 4x4 low with my '02 F350.
I attempted it just as a fluke... I have a Case 1150B track loader and almost used it to move the boat... but at the last minute I said "what the heck, let's see what this hoss can do..." :-)
I was pleasantly surprised at the power and traction.
A brief story of my own. A buddy had a Z-71 and he called my cell and said he was stuck in the mud near the house and he needed a tow. Well by the time I got there, he had another friend with another Z-71 stuck trying to pull him out.
I pulled up, shifted into 4LOW, drove across and through their ruts in my truck to get lined up. My bud asked me which I wanted to pull out first.... I said don't worry about it, leave 'em chained together and pulled them both out at the same time.
One of my proudest moments. By the way that was with my '97 SC PSD 4x4 not my newer truck.
If Cummins engines are so bad, then why are they the smallest displacement diesel engine in a pickup, with the potential to put out the most horspower and torque(500hp,800lb/fttq). They are the simplest, most reliable diesel engine design. Why do all semi trucks, farm machines, and construction equipment use a sraight six design. Many Cummins engines run 300-400,000 or more, pulling heavy loads, with no major engine work. They usually make better mileage than a PSD.
I'm not trying to defend dodge pickups. Ford makes a better pickup than Dodge. Much better than Chevy. They have the most solid 4X4 system, tightest body, and best looks. I just think that it is pathetic that the largest displacement diesel puts out power ratings similar to the much smaller diesels in Dodge and chevy. I think the 6.0 will be much better. I also think that most people drive a Cummins improperly. The engine doesn't need to be revved up like a PSD. Most people also get an automatic because they are too lazy to shift. Dodge autos suck.
The most abused, overloaded pickups I've seen have Cummins engines in them. They just keep running as the pickup slowly falls to pieces. I live in ranch country and more and more people are switching to Dodge. People out here can't afford a pickup every 60,000 miles so they need something that lasts. And complaints about the noise. Cummins sound like a REAL DIESEL!!!!!!!
Cummins makes a good solid DIESEL engine, no bells, no whistles and it's a basic simply design. It is fantastic in farm equipment, I'd shudder to think about a PSD in my tractor. That said... I still don't want a Cummins in my truck either, I happen to like the updates that have been done to make the engines quieter etc... And I've not seen a power/torque curve comparison... but the PSD seems much stronger where I need it than the Cummins.
As for displacement... I think marketing got involved in this 5.0, 5.9, 6.9, 7.3.... bigger is better. We are going to see technology replace displacement. Take a look at the roughly 300lb 3.6L Porsche Turbo engine... 424HP with 400ftlb of torque and I got 17 MPG if I kept my foot out of it. Talk about a lot from a little... but the engine does cost around 15,000.00 bare.
Dodge makes crappy sorry POS trucks of which I had the misfortune of buying a 2000 model. To back up the POS truck, they supply POS service as well.
Ever since I sarted seeing window stickers that show figures pissing on Ford's I started counting the types of brakedowns on the side of the road. Chev tops the list, Dodge is second. Now then there could be a lot of different reason why they are broke down but Dodge is at the top of the list for the hood up. That tell's me engine related problems. Dodge also has the most warrenty repairs then all automakers. The reason I think that people buy Dodge is for the warrenty.
I also have a brother-in-law that has a wrecker service and he pulls alot of chev and Dodge trucks to repair shops.
I have owned three Ford trucks and have put close to 200,000 on each one and never been left on the side of the road. In fact the only problem I have ever had was a oxygen sensor on my 97 250! Chev had left me on the side of the road twice.
Ford f series outsells Chev and Dodge combind, That ought to tell you something.
