If Cummins engines are so bad, then why are they the smallest displacement diesel engine in a pickup, with the potential to put out the most horspower and torque(500hp,800lb/fttq). They are the simplest, most reliable diesel engine design. Why do all semi trucks, farm machines, and construction equipment use a sraight six design. Many Cummins engines run 300-400,000 or more, pulling heavy loads, with no major engine work. They usually make better mileage than a PSD.
I'm not trying to defend dodge pickups. Ford makes a better pickup than Dodge. Much better than Chevy. They have the most solid 4X4 system, tightest body, and best looks. I just think that it is pathetic that the largest displacement diesel puts out power ratings similar to the much smaller diesels in Dodge and chevy. I think the 6.0 will be much better. I also think that most people drive a Cummins improperly. The engine doesn't need to be revved up like a PSD. Most people also get an automatic because they are too lazy to shift. Dodge autos suck.
The most abused, overloaded pickups I've seen have Cummins engines in them. They just keep running as the pickup slowly falls to pieces. I live in ranch country and more and more people are switching to Dodge. People out here can't afford a pickup every 60,000 miles so they need something that lasts. And complaints about the noise. Cummins sound like a REAL DIESEL!!!!!!!
Well another 2 cents worth. I drag a 9500 fiver behind my 02 F350 dually. My wife and I work with an ARCA race team and we tow our "house" to the races and each time we leave home, we are in for 10+ hours down the interstate and over the last 3 seasons, I have rubbed it in about how 8 out of 10 campers, or anything being towed behind a truck are towed behind a Ford PSD. Mostly 250's or 350's. Very few F150's but some are out there. The overwhelming majority are our PSD's. One thing last year that scared us was when we watched a tow behind camper flip on it's side being towed by the Tundra crew cab. It wobbled one way and wobbled the other way and over it went...Thank goodness for my heavy dually....I ain't sayin it would not do the same thing, but it is highly unlikely....and they brag about the towing capacity of the Tundra...
my .02. a cummins, as said is a good little motor. they can turn out some impressive dyno numbers. but, being an INLINE, the big numbers dont do as much (speed wise or pullling wise) as a smaller number in a v-block. example- 300-six ford. great motor. big torque for a small motor. but, a 460 ford, which isnt rated alot more torque will run circles around the 300six. its configuration, not just numbers.
Me and my dad own a gunclub here in IN. We buy clay targets in MO. So every time we go get them we get about 15,000 lbs on a tandem axle trailer. Last time we went dad was feeling brave so we got 14 skids of targets which is 28,000 pounds. Plus our 2.5 ton trailer. so we are cruising down the road in his 2003 f350 dually pulling 33,000 pounds. All was good the whole way home. But the only obstacle left was our driveway to the gunclub which is about 45 degree slope uphill. And you would have to know my dad. But he doesnt have any gauges in the truck whatsoever and he has his tuner on a 100 horse with stock intake and exhaust. So he poors the coals to it and we are about 2/3's up the hill and i thought we were gonna make it fine when I look in the mirror and we are blowing fire 20 feet out both sides of the truck. I tell him and he says there is nothing we can do now. So we make it up the hill and when he shuts the motor down the fire stops. So come to find out there is a blow by on the tranny and it spewed and when it did it hit the exhaust. So there stands my dads best friend in his chipped dodge laughing saying his 04 cummins could pull it up the hill no problem. So we put the trailer on his truck. Needless to say we filled dads truck up with tranny fluid after it cooled down and pulled the dodge and the trailer back up the hill. lol long story
The only other kind of diesel id buy would be a 600hp/2050lbft caterpillar diesel.Imagine one of those in a pickup!
Yeah but those are about 14 liter engines and weigh about 2 tons. I don't think you'd like how big the truck would have to be just to be able to carry the engine.
Well I drove the Dodge before I bought my PSD, nothing wrong with the motor, it was the truck it was attached to that really bothered me!! I drove an '03 Dodge, I just think Dodge has got to be the most ignorant manufacturer, period. They can't figure it out. It took them what, 20+ years to figure out people want 4 FULLSIZE doors and FULLSIZE seating? So now they have a fullsize cab, finally, but you can only get it with a 6' bed!! Stupid!! Stupid, Stupid!! The '03 I drove had their little half size rear doors, PATHETIC!! Seems to me, Dodge figured they had the cummins, that's all they need. Screw what people want.
