It sounded like a exhaust leak or a lifter. I started about 1600 rpm and tapered off at about 2200 rpm. It was worse under load

So what is everyone saying, I have a 99 f250 crew cab. If I take it to the muffler shop and have them take the "S" curve part of the Y pipe out and run it more direct into the existing Y pipe it will have a ping sound to it. Is that what will happen. thanks

Just go buy a y pipe for a 2001 truck, I'm sure that any new y pipe will have the fix

My 2001 had the same rattle. It was the heat shield on the Y-pipe. I just welded it a little better, Problem went away... Now I don't have a Y-pipe.
