289 swap

i've finally gotten this bad boy 88 up to super running condition... only i would like a bit more oommph into its butt and i have recently acquired a ford 289 for cheap and i was wondering how much trouble is it to put in and whats the cost and parts needed for this job.. all the other threads and the rangerstation only goes over on the 302/351 when putting a v8 in.. i figure this is a small of the small blocks and i want to keep my beefy rebuilt mistubishi manual.. so if anybody oculd help me that would be awesome!!! names mike

A 289 swap should be identical to a 302 swap. I don't think they are any different externally. With that being said, you'll get better results using a 302. There's a reason the old saying "There's no replacement for displacement" is an old saying. Its true.

thanks man. im just asking for the 289 cuz i got it for basically free and i was assummming it got better fuel efficiency than the 302 but i am probably wrong.. i suppose ill just sell the 289 on ebay or something and buy a 302 for it ..

I've got a 289 in a 65 mustang and its got plenty of power. Definately more than my bronco. Its just that if I was going to go through all the trouble of swapping, I'd want all the power I could get out of it.

Good luck

yeah thats where the 289 came out of.. my friends dad's fastback. he was parting it out cuz the body is rusted through and undercarriage is worthless now. i was just looking at im guessing the fuel efficiency is better fro the 289 cuz its a smaller engine.. prices are up over 2 bucks a gallon in northern va so im not looking to fill a 23 gallon tank every 4 days.. i drive heavily during the week going out to west va and off road on the weekends and breaks form school. im getting ready to put a 4 inch suspension and 2 inch body to properly fit 33x12.50 and i dont think that even with the 2.9 being completelyefurbished could hold up against the power of the 289. so thats all that i was thiking .. nay comments about that??? im mainly looking for fuel effiency with power, which i know is an allusion but im trying to find a good balance.

Well I'm getting about 20 on the highway from my Bronco. I get about 12 out of the mustang and 25 out of the vette. So a larger engine, not working as hard can be more efficient (plus the vette has overdrive, the mustang doesn't). I'd think a mild V8 and an overdrive should be too hard on gas with these little bodies. Its going to be ugly this summer no matter what you're driving though.

Four wheeling in WV sounds fun. I'm an old WV boy myself. I'm stuck here in northern IL these days where its flat and cold!!!

haha... im getting less than 16 on the highway think the cat has something to do with that .. hasn't been replaced since i bought it and its got over 200k on it... but not sure if i want to spend 120 on a highflow when i wont need them in about 4 years... everything is getting a new makup this summer though.. exhaust, air intake, fuel delivery, so yeah... got a wad of cash from the government..hehe.. alright well thanks man youve been a big help in deciding on it.. but im think im ognna stay witht he 289.. puts out more than enough power for mud and should keep the same fuel with the bigger tires im guessing and if i got a 302 id more than likely blow out the transmission so that was also a deciding figure.. my trans can only handle 215 at the tops ..so i'd like to keep it easy on that.. but thank you

If the 289 came out of a 65 it will be a little different on the backend. They had a smaller flywheel and the bellhouseing different. Easy fix though the newer stuff will fit. As far as power there isn't a lot of differance between the 289 and 302 and the 289 is probably the stronger of the two. Had on in my 66 mustang and with a little work and money I had easily reached 398 hp at rear tires (on a dyno)

its the stock power house of the two yeah but the 302 is just a bigger engine which gives more room for improvement according to my friends dad who rebilds custom racers and stuff... yeah he said the bell housing would be different so im getting ready to talk to advance adapters to see hwat they can do for me.. nobody has really started to focus on the bronco II yet its all jeep or blazer.so im not sure how well they can help...i'll see what they can do first

You might try a 4.0 out of an explorer. This is an easier swap and is a lot more powerful than a stock bronco.

Fordborn . . early '65 289 engines were five bolt blocks, but later '65 through 68 were standard 6 bolt blocks just like 302s.
