I have two Ford Motors. One is a 300 6 .The Other is a 400M. I have been told that both motors have heads that can be "shaved" to increase the Comp. Ratio. is this true? And if it is are there any other modifications that need to be done to accomodate the machining?
Heads can be shaved to reduce the size of the combustion chamber, therfore increasing compression ratio. Becareful if you have the heads shaved to much you will have to have the intake manifold changed to line up with the head. Also the valvetrain must be checked.
In my opinion this is not a good way to increase compression ratio. Shaving the heads is more for making the head flat for the mounting purpose. I would look for a different head with a smaller combustion chamber, or get some new pistons flattop or domed.
If you use the 400m determine your head combustion chamber volume, and get appropriate pistons to up the compression if thats what you want. As milling the heads on a v-8 could cause head to intake fitment problems, if a certain amount is taken off and they weren't angle milled.
As far as the 300 goes, mill those suckers, this way you can use stock or appropriate stock replacement pistons (that are cheap) and mill the heads for compression, there are no issues as the intake fits directly to one head. Just be sure you know your cc and what the end compression ratio will be, but you knew that. Good luck
Cardinal, yes, you can mill the heads on your 400M. Cutting .060 off from the heads is no trouble at all. But it does require you to also mill the sides of the heads ( where the intake bolts on ) the same .060. This will let your intake fit normally. Don't forget you'll also need the .060 shorter pushrods. DF
