Question Air filters

Ok I know from reading the FAQ that there has been a debate over how much gas mileage you get out of the K&N airfilters. Unfortunatly I just started to look at this site yesterday. Anyway, I have an 03 F150 supercrew. What type of performance has anyone experienced from getting either the replacement filter or the new box? Just curious what people really have experienced.

Thanks for your input.

you would get no performance just you can clean it instead of replacing

Yes, like Hendrix said. I don't personally know about an intake, but I put a K&N filter on to replace the stock when the truck only had about 50 miles on it, and got no performance increases. I didn't expect any. I was looking for better breathing which I thought might translate into better fuel economy. It didn't. So I changed to an Amsoil foam filter, and it did give me better fuel mileage. That, or my truck broke in and gave me better fuel mileage. Your guess is probably as good as mine, Ha!

K&N filter did nothing for me either that's why I'm looking for an intake.

I replaced the stock air filter system with a K&N High Performance intake kit. It worked out pretty well, it took about an hour to install and I could feel a difference in power. It wasn't huge, but it was noticeable and also made my engine a little louder. I also gained another mpg from it.

The biggest difference in power I noticed was that at low end, instead of my truck downshifting when I gave it a little throttle, it instead just held the gear and accelerated, which is a big boost in my mind. Sucks to have your truck have to shift, accelerate a little, then upshift again to cruise.

guys, save your money and get a good filter like a motorcraft or a wix.

The k&n filter won't get you anything except a dirty mass airflow sensor.

I have never had a problem with K&N filters dirtying up anything. I've had one in my Mustang for over 100,000 miles and I have never had to clean my MAF. I pulled it out a couple months ago to check it after reading about it on this site and it is as clean as it was new. I have had one on my 01 5.4L for quite a while now and the intake tract in it is clean as new too. They are great filters. I guess if you were to put too much oil on them it could cause a problem. I just follow the directions on the cleaning kit and all is well.

K&N Intake/Filter

General Info on Intake for anyone looking - If you have the money to spare, the intake system can't really hurt anything. I recently (month ago) installed K&N 77 Series on my 2003 Supercrew 4.6L V8 and have been realitively happy with the results. There is a slight bit more power, which on the smaller engine is useful, gas mpg remains to be seen, I did hit 18 for the first time since purchase though last week, used to avg. 16.5-17.5 since buying in October of 03'. In other words, if you want to spend the money, do it, if it's a toss up, I would probably just replace with a quality filter instead of the whole intake system. Just my opinion. (If anyone has had different/better results I would love to hear them on this subject.)

I also added a K&N air filter after owning my 2002 truck less than a month with about 150 miles on it. I now have 42,000 miles on the same filter. I felt a tad more acceleration response but then again i could have been imagining it.

I like the money saving aspect of cleaning it vs. buying a new paper element every year. I also run my K&N filter in the factory box during the winter and remove the box in the spring with the "poor mans FIPK" .

To each their own i guess....i like my K&N filter, just my 2¢ worth.
