I replaced the glow plugs and now the truck seems to cycle a little longer. I also cleaned out the injectors and changed all filters etc. Now when I start the truck it fires right up and then dies after about 5 sec. It will not start again unless I use some wd-40. Once it statrs it smokes constantly (white). Could it be the injector pump, my truck has 250K on it and I don't know if it is the stock pump as it had 200K when I bought it. Also I have a pump from a newer 7.3 and wonder if they changed over the years.
Thanks
Sounds like you are getting air in the fuel system. What year truck is this? I would not use WD40 or any other kind of starting fluid with the glow plugs hooked up as it can cause the glow plug tips to break off and fall in to the cyl.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Oct-02 AT 12:56 PM (EST)]Then I would check the return caps on the injectors. Did you replace the o-rings on each injector when you had it apart? Another trick is to install a clear line on the return side of the filter housing, if you have bubbles then you have an air leak.
From my understanding the Injection pump for a IDI is the same except for the really early 6.9l's (85-86 years)? But everything else is the same, just where they set the fuel delivery screw, as in for a turbo or not. Now the supply pumps are the same for all the years.
