Changed Injector pump
There was some talk on here about some pumps that seemed to smoke more than others so when I put my used eng in I just went with the pump that was on it Ihad tested the injectors before we started it . Well wen we got it running it seemed to run alright and pulled good but it smoked all the time . Took the pump off my blown motor cause it only has about 15000 k on it and now its better. Go figure

im not an injection pump genius by any means, but i think i read somewhere on one of these threads that any time you change the injection pump the timing can be a real hassel to get right. perhaps the motor you put in someone monkeyed with the IP and didnt get it set just right and when you put your old one in you got it pretty close on timing.
i think when you set it by eye that is called static timing, and to get it perfect you dynamic timing if i got that right.

yeah boots you are right on and each pump will be a little different. The lines are just a point of reference and are not meant to be the correct timing by any means. The are just to get the truck running and then it is timed using equipment after that. The timing marks on the truck will remain but each pump will be different. Not by a lot but enough that you will notice in smoke or power. The reason the old setup was smoking was either a tired pump not popping the injectors correctly or the injectors were worn and leaking so fuel was constantly being leaked into the system. Probably saw a significant puff of smoke at takeoffs. Another factor could just be timing. Have you properly timed any of these setups axel?

Other than going by the marks on gears and pumps nope I have changed out 20 or 30 of this type of pump over the years that I have worked on boats and most times they are plug and play but once in awhlie you get one thats off I am just happythat it was simple fix

Lol, you may be the luckiest guy on here. haha. Most times to get the best performance they arent just plug and play, you need to get dynamic timed and lined up marks is usually very retarted timing. You need to usually be about a dimes width or so to the passenger side and then you are sitting just about right. Either way, awesome its working and best luck!

I have a similiar question. i am eventually going to turbo my 7.3 and at the same time replace the IP and injectors to ones for a turbo setup. As said already, the lines are just to get it running, and smoke is a sign that its off, but what is dynamic timing exactly, and is it a DIY? As far as static timing, how would i tell as im adjusting it whether its to high or retarded? I just got my first diesel, so forgive me, im learning as i go!
