Hi there, I replaced the timing belt on my 94 ranger. I noticed that the old one was a tooth off! In any case, I put the new one on correctly. But now, the engine is knocking a lot when driving it! One thing I noticed is that the base timing is OK at 10 BTC, but as soon as I plug the SPOUT, the timing jumps to 20 BTC and when I rev it up, the timing goes way past the scale to about 40 BTC, is that normal? Another thing, Can I try to decarbon this engine? I read the procedure for a 4L engine, can I try that on this one? Thanks a bunch.
Its normal for the timing to advance when the spout is reconnected, and those numbers seem OK. You can use the same procedure as the 4.0. Are you sure that it was off by one tooth?

Yes, the haynes manual shows the crankshaft keyway at 12 o'clock, but in my engine it was at about 1 o'clock. The funny thing is that the engine run like that! I'm going to try decarbonning the engine tomorrow, I hope that gets rid of the knocking. Thank you for your help.
