My 87 e150 van with a 302 lost power and died at 40mph. Put on new ignition module and it fired up but I had to move the distributor to get to the module so timing was off. I removed the spout connector, set timing at 10 btc then replaced spout connector, engine idles rough then won't re-start. Checked and found code for tps so I replaced it, still have to advance timing to 30 btc to start engine and after returning timing to 10 btc it idles rough, almost dies when throttle is pressed, and won't restart. Any ideas?
Checked it today. At tdc on #1 the balancer lines up at 0 degrees and the rotor is approaching the #1 post. There is about 2-3 degrees of play in the crank before the rotor moves.
Replace the timing chain, as it sounds like it may be going. I would have that control module checked as it may be bad. I would also replace the PIP sensor in the distributor as well as clean up the vanes.
New module, new sensor in dist., new cap and rotor, Spark plugs look good. Set timing and it sounded good but when I touched the throttle it died and wouldn't re-start unless I advanced the timing to over 25 degrees. Could a timing chain with less than 3 degrees of play cause this much trouble?
