Is there any way to test the glow plug relay? My system cycles, ie. light comes on for 15-20 sec than goes off and you can hear the solinoid clicking for about 20 secs. I am changing my plugs this weekend and wondered if I should change the solinoid as well on spec. I priced one out and the dealer wants $291.01 Cdn for it. A bit steep for a solinoid.
As far as I know the glow plug solenoid is a standard off the shelf Ford starter relay. Go down to your local discount auto parts store and see if they have one that matches the one you've got (I'm sure they do).
I just replaced mine. and What I found out was..While watching your voltage meter on your dash turn the ignition switch to activate the glow plugs. The voltage should drop a little once the relay has been activated. With the ignition switch off, confirm this and take a 12 volt test light and put the lead on the neg terminal of the battery and probe one terminal (one with the red stripe) on your relay and you should see the light light up. Now, turn the ignition switch on and probe the other reminal and your light should now light up. If it does not go to your local NAPA auto store and for around $20.00 get the part number GPR-109 and your in business.
A gpr looks, smells, tastes, and feels like a starter relay, but they aint the same. A GPR wont handle the same amount of amps as a starter relay will.
