I hope this question is not to stupid! I am just trying to figure what is causing the excessive black smoke. I know it is common for black smoke when you use a programmer but it did not use to do this so bad. I have a 2000 F350 4x4 CC 7.3 with 157,000, I change my filters frequently and I usually run the 85 hp on my Prediator. If I drive slow (the speed limit) around town in OD it seems to be lugging and blowing out black smoke or if I start to go up a grade and make some boost I really dump black smoke, just trying to figure out why because it did not used to do this even with the Pred. I have tried the lower HP settings and it still does it maybe a little less. I know this is a little long winded but Iam wanted to explain. Thanks
On most the diesel trucks I work on it is usually a clogged intake, either filter or ducts have something stuck in them. Have also seen boost sensors go out and cause the same problem.
Whats going on with your exhaust. Do you still have a muffler. How about a cat. Could they be clogged somehow? I have been running a Dp tuner chip for some time with alote of black smoke. I just learned all the smoke was do to my restrictive exhaust. No cat but did have a stock muffler. Took that muffler off and went to a 4'' dp to 5'' exhaust no muffler. Now with the chip in the 80 setting I have to try and kill it to get good smoke. Also any noticable difference in egt's?
I replaced my muffler 2 years ago with a 4" flow thru muffler and I do not have a cat. I have a ford AIS Filter with the fender boot and the filter minder does not show that it is restricted. I will have to try and check the boost sensor my gauge shows boost and if I really punch it my SES light goes on at about 26 psi.
Thanks Al
