I installed a PHP Hydra a few days ago and am fairly happy with it so far. I do have to say it produces a lot of thick black smoke with the 80 hp performance, 100hp performance and up. The 140 extreme is extereme if you like smoke. I am thinking that the Ford AIS I have installed isn't helping and maybe it's time to go back to the 6637 Air Filter even though I do not like the noise from it. Any of you out there running a Hydra seeing a lot of smoke with the higher settings?
Bill
I have the Hydra and have run the PHP 80 and 100hp with the AIS. Only see a haze at night for the most part unless I'm really heavy on the pedal during the day but its not thick black smoke.
I am seeing 25# boost so don't think there is a leak. I even see black smoke wth the 65hp dd, not as thick as with the 100 or 120 but it's very noticable. I also have a Superchips Micro Tuner and the truck smokes a lot with it's two programs. I think I'll put the 6637 back on and see how it does.

25 PSI max? Your wastegate is likely opening. Red line mod will help this.
AIS intake, 4" exhaust, red line mod, stock everything else, and a tuner:
It's not the AIS... and you can't get more than about 60-65 HP out of tuning alone on stock sticks. To demand more than that makes heat and smoke. When buying big tunes, read the fine print - it should say something along the line of "you will need additional modifications to the truck to achieve these horse power gains".
Disconnected and plugged the red line. I selected ICP, MAP and Boost on the Scangage. Dialed in 120hp Racing on the Hydra. MAP show 36.2 boost 36.6 and next the actual Boost Gage only showed 23 to 25 psi. ICP would run anywhere between 2600 to 2950 on hard acceleration. Still smoking away when really standing on it. I never got an SES light, does the Hydra prevent defueling when it gets over 22 to 23 psi? I also have a Bank's Big Head Actuator with 6 1/5 turns to shorten the rod ( it was disconnected this time though). If I just go by my Isspro 0 to 30 psi gage I never saw more than 25 psi and to get that I had to stand on it to the tune of 3000 rpm or a little more. My PCM code is AEB2 as it came from the factory but had it relashed to AEB4 so that the old SCMT 1700 would work. Using Hydra Flash program I used the HEX code for the AEB2 as that's what it called for.

I don't have a modiefied valve body, I have a 6 speed does that make a difference? If not, should I just try and run the VRAA653 and clear out the TOAA4Z2 I am currently running? I still don't understand why my Isspro Boost Gage sees only 25 psi and the Scangage MAP and Boost are seeing over 36?
Thanks,
Bill
MAP and boost shouldn't be reading the same, unless you happen to be in outer space Boost should read MAP minus your local barometric pressure, which at your elevation would be about 12.7. I'd have to imagine the boost gauge is probably accurate, and the boost reading from the scangauge is erroneous.
Maybe this will clear up some confusion. Do you get the same message circled in red below?
MAP 36 at 12.6 PSI elevation pressure works out to just over 23 PSI boost, but random sampling doesn't tell us much. Graphing the MAP sensor (after recording) along with a bunch of other PIDs tells us what's going on with the engine. Trying to "catch" a number on the gauge by glancing over while your foot is making like Fred Flintstone may very well miss some details.
Found the problem with the map and boost reading on the scangage, the boost MTH setting was wrong. I had to play with it some but got it straightend out, now boost reads 00 with KOEO it was reading same as map at 12.4 to 12.6.
The Recommended Preferred Calibrations was there with TOAA4Z2 recommened.
Guess I will need a AE to get the reading needed.

If you have a laptop or netbook, AE is a powerful choice for the money. If you have a portable device, there are a few useful apps - but Torque is the flavor of the month. Your scan gauge is nice, but I assume it doesn't record or display graphs.
Thanks Tugly, the scangage monitors a lot of things but I am affraid thats about all it does, no record or graphing that I know of. I have been meaning to get the AE and this is one more reason. I guess I will need a new laptop first, mine is old and slow doesn't even have wifi. Looks like I may need to get real busy on the honeydo jobs to get the CFO to ok a new laptop and the AE.
