OK Folks here we go again. Now that the weather is better, I want to get rid of the constant yellow ABS light off on my dash.
All brakes were replaced & adjusted three months ago, brake fluid completely replaced (was black) and system bled. Tested dump valve with paperclip,no movement. MC is OK. Yellow light still on.
Mechanic gave me a computer printout stating CODE 16.
Does anyone know what CODE 16 means? Also can you tell me (pictures are good) where exactly I can find the ABS SPEED SENSOR to check and what it looks like (suspect). Very much appreciated. Andrew
The RABS works with a couple of sensors, but the one in the rear end is the cheapest to replace. I only have experience with my 4wd van, which also has a sensor in the transmission and one in the transfer case. Those are priced progresively higher.
I don't know if you have an Autozone in your area or if they do this everywhere, but in my area they have a book full of diagnostic codes and will scan your car and tell you what the code mean so that you hopefully buy a part from them to fix it.
CODE 12-16: If codes 12 through 16 should appear, retest the system and read the codes again. If the same codes appear, the control module should be replaced

I had my light come on on my 93 Aerostar because of the pressure switch on what I think is a distribution manifold right after the master cylinder. When I removed the connector the light went away. The switch was $20 at the dealer. A little pricy for a small screw in plactic switch. Couldn't hurt to pull off the connector and give it a quick try. It would be a lot cheaper that the module.
Code 16 is always present, unless a system concern has been detected and a diagnostic trouble code has been stored. This code should be used by the technician to verify that the RABS II system is OK.
Code 16 will be output by the anti-lock electronic control unit when one of two conditions exist:
The technician ground Circuit 571 (BK/O).
The RABS II Keep Alive Memory (KAM) fuse has blown.
If the KAM fuse has blown, the REAR ABS warning light will begin flashing Code 16 (or a diagnostic trouble code if a concern has been detected) if the stoplight switch is depressed (Ranger), or the running lamps are turned-on (Aerostar).
Therefore, check the KAM fuse when diagnosing complaints of REAR ABS light flashing.
