Do any of you have, or have experience using a laser printer? I currently have an inkjet, but have been considering a laser printer for awhile, because of improved quality etc, but was wondering if the price (both machine and toner) was worth upgrading
If you print mostly in black and white then the cost that you will pay for an inkjet machine is astronomical compared to that of a laser. Case in point:
HP Laserjet 1012 printer (their new base laser printer)
Machine price: $199.99, but often found on sale for around $149.99
Toner cost/amount of pages: $69.99 for 2,500 pages in "draft" (lowest quality mode)
In HP's the toner is the only consumable you replace for the most part, except in their color laserjets.
For ink you can expect roughly 30 bucks for about 300-450 (depending on size of cartridge) pages in draft mode.
As you can see the B&W printing costs are night and day with the two types of printing. I say decide what's best for you and your printing needs.
I have a Laserjet 1220, same as 1200 but has the scanner and copier. We've printed around 4000 pages, used one $55 toner cartridge I think around 2800-3000 pages. I print a lot of pages for school and wife quite a bit for her work. I'd have used $300+ worth of black ink and maybe a little color too. Check toner cartridges at www.provantage.com, always had good luck with them and usually a little cheaper than anywhere else.
I have a laserjet 2200d and an HP inkjet. I very seldom use the inkjet, as I don't need color or photo quality. The cartridges for the laserjet run about $95. So far I have printed 3000+ pages on the original cartridge. This was not at draft quality. It was at best quality. Also the printer prints at 19 pages per minute at that quality and prints duplex automatically. Best money I ever spent for a printer. I have gone through quite a few inkjets and at $25 for an ink cartridge that I am lucky to get 1000 pages out of, I will continue to have a laserjet.
I only use my inkjet to print photos. The cost per page on my 1200DPI laser is way below any inkjet I've owned. Plus, you can't beat the B&W quality. There isn't an inkjet on the market that can hold a candle to a decent laser's output. You won't be disappointed in the upgrade (unless you buy a cheap laser that eats paper).
