I just bought me a 1997 powerstroke. It's a beauty! I'd like to put a good loud exhaust system on it, but I want to keep it legal. Did the '97 models come with catalytic convertors? I see something ahead of the muffler that looks like a cat, but I didn't know if that was something else, like a resonator. Thanks in advance for any info.

I had a 1996 and removed the complete axhaust system, put on a banks downpipe and a straight exhaust with a flowmaster single in and dual out and ran it in 3 inch straight thru it sounds good you can hear the turbo from idle all the way thru the turbo makes it quiet enought too get away with not being too loud.
Is a muffler required? I have seen trucks up here that can't possibly have a muffler. I want to put a banks exhaust or maybe a gibson without the muffler.
I don't run a muffler on mine. It's not that much louder until you get up to 2500+ RPM's. The turbo does most of the muffling, so a muffler really isn't necessary. If you install a new exhaust system, I would recommend a complete 4" system with a new turbo downpipe. There's no point in less if you're going to put money into a new system.
