How many of you guys out there have long hair? And how many of you get descriminated against for having long hair? I have long hair and my dad, uncle, and grandma always give me a hard time about it. They always tell me I'll never find a job because of it. The funny thing is is I have a job and it has never prevented me from getting one. They even tell me that when we're in church that everyone looks at me weird which I don't think is true and if it is then the person has a problem. Jesus had long hair and he's the one that they're there worshipping. I've gotten a few dirty looks from a few older folks but that's about it. I even had a girl at school tell me that she thinks guys look sexy with long hair. I don't understand what the problem is. Have any of you guys ever faced problems like this.
Hair is a renewable resource (at least until your 40's ) so do what you want with it. I'm not a fan of long hair but it's not my head. If your work doesn't have an issue with it then why change? I've had every possible color hair over the past 5 years (and now it's shaved to about 1/8 inch). People will look but hey, it's your hair.
I had long hair all through the 80's, and into the 90's.....Then I went and got a flat top haircut and have been wearing that ever since. It is much easier to deal with.
Wore my hair very, very long in my 20's and early 30's. And I took a lot of grief from everyone; parents, relatives, even strangers. Of coure, that was in the 60's and early 70's and I was labeled a hippy, war protester, bum, you name it!
Now I am a career counselor and "Yes", hair can be a discriminating point when applying for certain types of jobs (especially professional jobs or jobs where you must meet the "public"). Even though hair doesn't make the man - many employers make judgements.
By the way, now my hair is fairly short but then it is no longer a renewable resource for me!

When I was a pre-teen, my father made my brother and I get crew cuts every summer. This was back in the late 60's when everyone wanted long hair. He died when I was 13 and I didn't get another haircut until I was looking for a job in my senior year of college 8 years later. A was discriminated, singled out by teachers and cajoled by older relatives the entire time, but I didn't care. My crewcut sporting gym teacher called me Goldilocks and being my homeroom teacher as well, used to bust my chops about wearing a headband. I fought him on it and used the fact that we didn't have a dress code prohibiting them. He was tight so he thought he'd fix me by making me wrestle one of his best HS wrestling team members in gym class. I held him to a draw until I ran out of gas and lost on points. Surprisingly, he didn't mess with me after that.
My other HS teachers, for the most part, thought "druggie" and were amazed that I was an enigma. I got good grades, despite missing ~40 days of school/year ( I skipped a lot) and did very well on my college entrance exams. In college, at least 1/2 of all of the male student body had long hair, so it wasn't an issue.
When it came time for on-campus recruitment, I knew that long hair would be an issue and since entry level professional jobs were scarce in 1978, I cut my hair and haven't looked back since.
At 47, I like my hair on the short side. It's easier to take care of and looks better, IMO. My advice would be to cut yours if you're looking for a good professional job (and no mullets, they're for losers who think that cutting it all the way off is selling out but they don't have the conviction to leave it all long. )
As much as I think it shouldn't be, and wish it wasn't, an issue, IT IS.
I started letting my hair grow in the last 1/2 of my Grade 12 year, and I had long hair all through university. It was pretty much accepted there, and anyone who didn't like, well, let's just say, I wasn't too concerned. Like everyone else, I had to hear it from friends and family.
I quickly realized my look wasn't doing me any favours when the recruiters came out to campus. They don't look down at the grades on the paper much when they're too busy staring at you.
I cut my hair.
Once I landed a steady job, I suppose I could have gone back, but when everyone around you has short, neat hair, you tend to just go with the flow. Long hair is a definite "taboo" in the world of professionals IMHO.
jpsartre12, I'd love to compare "hippy" pics with you.

I've got a few, including my HS and college graduation pictures. My sister "ironed" my hair to get it straight for my HS picture. At its longest, it was down to the middle of my back.
Welcome back.
Around Christmas last year there was 4 or 5 pages here on this if you want to get diverse ops. Long Hair: It’s about the same as having rings in unorthodox areas of the body in Waybakair, Alabama – as far as going in for a professional job.

im a low mantience lazy person so i hat dealing with long hair i like it so i dont have to even have to think about it. a lot of guys my age spend and hour every day combing, coloring, moosing there hair and God knows what else. i care about my apperance but only to an extent. i have one of those crew cuts now. hey maybe someday ill have some long hair just for the fun of it. i do wear a bandana sometimes though.
I dont think there is nothing wrong with it as long as its not too long and you keep it neat and clean. Mine is on my shoulders were I like it and yes it is a pain to blow dry etc but I don't ever get hassled about it plus like you say some girls like it. Also tired of looking like every other person with short hair or maybe I like the 70's too much

With all truth being told yes you will be looked at, discrimated against, and so on because of the long hair. I personally don't have a problem with it because I had it to & would have it again if my hair still grew.
Unfortunatly people use first appearances as first impressions & it will affect your employment also if you decided to go get a different job.
