I just bought an 87 ranger xlt 4x4 2.9l. When you push the clutch in it makes a friction sound. It is silent when the clutch is egaged. I am thinking it is not pulling the clutch out enough and rubbing. I am wondering what is the most common reason for this, slave cylinder? linkage? Any input would be welcomed.
will depend on many things, miles on the clutch, if changed when, what all has been done. When i bought my 94 it had a whirring sound, turned out to be blown plugs and burned up main shaft!
I do not know if you have the internal or external slave cylinder, if external you can R&R easily, could also be a weak master cyl. There is just no one way to trouble shoot without actually trying to see, feel, hear what you hear/feel. Check your master, is the resevoir full, are there any leaks around the master or inside the cab. Are there leaks from the lines or from the transmission. Try to bleed the system and see if that helps, this would be the easiest cheapest at this time.
Yuppers, it sounds like a throwout (release) bearing. My suggestion would be to inspect and consider replacing the rest of the clutch while you're in there. At minimum, I'd put in a new pilot bushing/bearing while you were at it.
