Unhappy Help..

I have a #3 miss-fire on a 97 Expedition EB 5.4 throttle body. I have replaced plugs "Bosch Plat." + coil pack + pcv valve with no luck, now I'm told this coud be a piston sensor in the back of the motor and would need to pull the intake off...

Has anyone had to do this before, that may give me some idea if this is right?

I would appreciate any feedback I can get on this...

I've seen where a LOT of people have problems with the Bosch plugs....could be as simple as that. Otherwise, I don't know what a piston sensor is....never heard of anyone with that problem.

Good Luck.

Replace it with a new factory Motorcraft and see if it makes a difference.

I'd guess it's the Bosch Plugs. Always use Motorcraft as they always work fine.

Never heard of a piston sensor. I think someone is pulling your leg to take your bucks. I don't see one listed in my shop manual.

Well I'm like you , so I went to advance and ask them about a "cam sensor" and they said they didn't have one in stock but could get one. He looked it up on the computor and it was around $13.0

The 5.4L sensor is suppose to be located on the firewall down past the throttle body, and have to take the intake off to get to it.

I have no idea if this is correct or not, my brotherinlaw say's he has known of the sensor, but didn't know where it was located.

Advance say's it can cause a missfire reading, and make the engine run bad and skip under pull.

Maybe someone can help me out here I'd like to know the truth.

Thanks ... cobrah

Sounds more like the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is the culprit. This part sends a signal to the PCM to help calculate spark timing.

The camshaft position (CMP) sensor is used for fuel synchronization.

The CKP is located under the AC compressor.

Thx. I will try to find this sensor when the motor cools down, I hope I don't have to pull the compressor...if so I will put it in the shop.

cobrah, yes, you'll have to remove the compressor to access the CKP sensor. But before going through all this trouble, I'd recommend changing the spark plug and maybe swapping a COP. I've never heard anybody mention a bad CKP or CMP sensor.

Thumbs down Ok...

Yea me either... a cam sensor was detected when a higher grade problem detector was used. (Hand held computor only a large one.)

It picked up #3 miss-fire then went further to describe the problem as a cam sensor that was bad.

So I don't know... The shop may want to make a fast buck!

Well... got tired of the annoying skip...the "Ford Place" jumped on the problem for around a hour and $154.0 out of pocket.

What was the culprit? Yep you got it, coil pack and a new motorcraft plug!

Go ahead and say it..."I told you so" "I told you so"!!!
