Need help

I posted this in the drive train section last night but didn't get a reply and was hoping someone over here could help. I am trying to get the axles out of my 8.8 rear end and the book says to remove the side gear pinion shaft lock bolt and side gear pinion shaft so that the axles can be pushed in to get the c-clips off. I have removed the locking bolt, but cant get the shaft out. Is it suppose to just push out or what? I have tried everything and cant get it out. I need to get these axles out this AM and would apreciate any advice. Thanks

Make sure the bolt didn't break inside. Should have about 1/4" length threads. Sometimes you have to take a hammer and punch and tap the shaft a little bit. Tap on the bolt hole end and push shaft forward.

I have tapped (actually beat) on it and it moves a very little bit and stops. I will check the bolt now. If it's broke off I dont know what I'll do.

The bolt does not appear to be broken, but it also doesn't look like it would be long enough to rear the shaft. I am trying to remove the correct part arent I? It is the shaft that the end of the axles hit when you push them in. The book calles it a side gear pinion shaft in the text, but in the picture it is called a differential pinion shaft. From the picture it looks like the pinion gears that are mounted on it ride in some slots, wouldn't this make the gears hit and not let the shaft come out? Thanks for your help.

Stick the bolt back in and see if it will tighten up. The end of the bolt should be rounded and not flat.

Another way to tell if the bolt is broken, you'll notice on the end of the shaft where the bolt goes in it has a machined flat you can see at the end of the carrier. Stick a flat blade screwdriver in there and see if it will rotate past the bolt hole.

OK I went out and tried to get it out, got P.O.ed and beat the living #@ out of it. part of the end of the shaft finally broke off which allowed me to see what appears to be a pin running through the shaft. This may be the end of the bolt I dont know. I am going to try to drill this thing out through the bolt hole and if that doesn't work I guess I'll beat on it some more. If this was the end of the bolt, then it would have been about 1 1/2" long and if there is some sort of seperate retaining pin, I don't see how you could ever get it out since there is no hole on the other side to drive it out.

It's definitely the rest of the bolt. If you got it exposed enough to file or grind it flush to push it the rest of the way out, then you can remove the broken portion on a vise or drill press.

Are you saying that the rest of the bolt could push through the other side opposite of the head of the bolt?

I thought you were able to push the pin up out of the carrier far enough to see the rest of the bolt. That steel is hard enough to where you can get a 1/2" brass drift, hit the pin and shear the rest of the bolt off. Then drill it out when you take the pin out.

Your right. Thanks I understand now. I finally got it out by beating on it. I got the axles out and took my cover off of my good truck and wouldn't you know it, some knucklhead had rouded off the bolt head. I guess I will have to go this whole thing again. Dang, I was hoping you would say i could just push the remainder of the bolt out through the other side. Anyway, thanks for all your help.
