I have a 1991 F450 s/d with a 460 gas. the truck has less than 60k on it. the problem is while driving at hi way speeds the lifters will start to rattle like they have collapced. they will quite down after a while but will do the same thing over and over again. i also have a 1986 F350 460 in it and it does the same thing. i first thought the 86 460 had the oil return holes pluged and the oil was not draning back into the pan. i removed both valve covers and every thing was clear. i did use air to blow all return holes, nothing. still same thing. now i have this truck and same same again. HELP.
thanks IN ADVANSE
Hi -- this may be off the mark, but does it happen on accelerat ion mostly or going up a hill when you press on gas? My point is that 460s have an exhaust gasket problem that happen with loose or even broken exhaust studs. Sounds a bit like lifters and sometimes will go away when exhaust manifold heats up and closes the gap. Then when the manifolds cool, noise comes back again. Difficult to diagnose because must be under load to hear noise and I have a problem trying to acclerate and stick a hose in my ear!!!?! Fix varies but most all require manifold removal. then you can buy copper exh gaskets from Jegs or have manifolds surfaced and mount without gaskets (Racers do this)n or install headers. I did the copper gaskets and they sealed well. Also check for aftermarket studs to replace stock studs even though none are broken (I hope!).
Lots of info on something that may not be your answer, but I was convinced I had a bad lifter and it turned out to be exh gasket. Hope this helps. Alex
Thanks For The Reply. Yes I Am Sure It Is Lifter Noise. My 86 F350 With 460 Does Have The Exaust Leak I Have Installed New Gaskets But They Failed Also. I Will Try The Copper Gaskets, Thanks Again.
the oil pressure is good and stays good while the noise comes and goes. it almost actes like the lifters lose the oil needed to keep pumped up and tight. like the oil gets blocked up in the valvecovers and can't returm to the pick up fast enough. if you slow down the lifters will quite down. i was going to add oil to the system but don't know if overfilling will hurt anything.
oldmanbergie,
Years ago I had a similar problem on a small block Chevy. The valve stem seals had disintegrated and partially blocked the oil return holes in the heads. Of course, the other symptoms were clouds of blue-white oil smoke at start-up and lowered oil pressure.
Ford had an oil pick up cracking problem with the fuelie combos
I have dealt with this very problem. The oil pump pick up cracks at the flange where it bolts to the pump. Although the oil pressure reads good there is intermittent air in the oil which can under certain conditions cause the lifters to collapse.
I replaced the pick up an viole' problem solved...
The "Mad Porter" may very likely have correctly identified the problem/solution. Stock Ford oil pressure gauges have such long response times that you'd never see a momentary pressure fluctuation. Even a good mechanical oil pressure gauge might not be fast enough to catch it.
THANKS for all the infromation the air geting into the system makes sence to me. i did have this problem once before on a 351w, but it was years ago. it never afected the lifters but the oil pressure was wackey.
THANKS AGAIN OLDMANBERGIE
