My 1991 f450 460 gas is giving me problems. the other day the the dash oil pressure gauge dropped to o while driving at normal speed. i pulled off and checked the oil on the full mark. started the truck the gauge right back up to normal. down the road again, the gauge dropped to o, this time i kept going and the gauge would jump from o to normal. the higher the rpm the faster it fell off?????. I replaced the sending unit same problem. so i connected a direct reading gauge to the rear of the engine where sending unit was. started the engine only 15 psi at idle as soon as i give it any rpms the pressure went to o. today i drained the oil removed the filter. i used a air hose and blew air into the fitting for the oil sending unit reconnected everything new oil, oil filter, and started it up 40 psi idle, but still will drop to 20 psi when reving the engine. i don 't get it why is the pressure going down??? not up??? THANKS IN ADVANCE OLDMANBERGIE!!!
The oil pump pick-up screen may be clogged with foreign matter or sludge. If you've got something being sucked up into the pick-up at higher flow rates that blocks it, your oil pressure would drop, and maybe at reduced oil flow rates like at idle the foreign matter may fall away from the screen and allow higher pumping pressures. The only way to test this theory is to drop the oil pan and see what is down in the bottom of your sump.
deep down i was not wanting to hear this. in order to get the oil pan off, the engine will have to be removed. has any one tried any type of engine flush?
I seem to remember folks replacing oil pans and their gaskets with the engines still in their trucks. Search the forum and you'll turn up lots of advice on doing this job.
