I've been storing a buddy's engine for four years now he's moved three times now. Anyway it's a 351M/400M on the valve cover. Will this motor bolt up to a 302's bellhousing? Can i use the 302 flywheel? How do i tell if it's 351 or 400. All i know is its out of a bronco.
No, it will not bolt up to a 302. The only pattern that matches it is the 429/460.
The only way to tell a 351M from a 400 is to pull the head and measure the stroke, or pull the oil pan and reference the crank number. I don't have specific info on the crank number, but there are enough posts here about it to find it easily using search.

Golly, Scroob. You don't know whether it will bolt up to a small block bellhousing or not. Your information is just plain wrong. Now the guy's gone and he's got bad information.

What in the *&^% are you talking about? I PLAINLY said that it WILL NOT bolt up to a small block.
Guys, there was at least one year, maybe two, that the 400 was made with a small block bellhousing pattern. I thought everybody know this, but apparently not.
Edit: 1973 400 with casting number D3AE-B is the magic number. Maybe the guy who was saving the engine knew he had the oddball 400 with the small block bellhousing pattern.

Huuuummmmm, don't bust someones ***** over the FMX block. Those are very few and very far between. In all likelihood, it's a standard M-block that he has. And by the way, D3AE is NOT the only casting number. My block is a D1AE and I'm about to buy a 2nd D1AE block.
The 400 FMX was a 1 year only option, that year being 1973. The 351M didn't come out until 1975, so there never was a 351M FMX block. Since the valve covers say 351M/400 and it's highly unlikely that FoMoCo was thinking far enough ahead to label the engine with a designation prior to it's existence, I'd say the chances of it being a 400 FMX block are slim & none.
