Does anyone know where (other than Ford) I can get a hinge spring (I don't know if that's the right term. It's the leaf that rides against the roller to detent the door) for a 1990 Reg cab? The hinge itself is fine. If I do need a new hinge is there a resonably priced aftermarket anywhere?
The best, and cheapest plaace is from a wrecker, but you will have to change the whole hinge as far as i know. You should change the door pins at the same time.
If you geta chance to browse a junkyard, you might be surprised how many trucks there will have the same problem. If the "spring" isn't broken, usually the roller develops a big flat spot.
My solution is to retrofit with hinges from an earlier 80's truck. They use an "S" shaped spring which is much less less trouble prone. I have seen the springs break, but it seems pretty rare. A downside is that you can expect to have to replace the pins and bushings in hinges that old. An upside is that
they bolt right on and perform the same function.
Worked for me, on both my 89 F150 and 87 Bronco.
thanks for the tip GypsyR. I grabbed a set of early 80's hinges at the pick-a-part. Not sure if I should change them out my self, or get a body shop to do it? any links on hinge swaps.
As an FYI, I ordered replacement springs from rockauto.com they were cheap and if you're ordering other things at the same time freight shouldn't be an issue.
Out of all the later 80's and 90 trucks all the door springs were broke but 1. anyone change the hinges out? I'm thinking it might be a alignment challenge, without chipping up the door, any tips would be greatly appreciated.
