Has anybody had a problem with the shifter linkage in the column (auto)? When I shift, there is a huge amount of play between the lever and the connection outside the firewall. At this point I have to go under the hood and pull it into park. Drive engages between the 2 and 1 marker. What ever the problem is, it deteriorated very quickly. About 2 or 3 times and it got worse. This is the first auto Ive had. Any tips \ direction in pulling the column apart? Is there a wear part in there ? Common problem ? Whats actually in there ? Its a '91 by the way...
I have the same problem with a twist. Trying to get to park, the truck sometimes slips back into reverse. What is the fix for this? I have an exploded view of the tilt coumn and it looks like Chinese arithmetic. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. You may e-mail me directly at swd_999@yahoo.com. Thank you.

There is a shift tube in the steering column that will either hold, or not hold (in your case) the shifter into place. The transmission may also have a detent in it to keep it from shifting gears without some effort from the driver. I cracked my shift tube installing a body lift on my truck. Always disconnect the linkage before lifting the truck. I can literally slide the shifter from lock to lock with no effort whatsoever. My transmission keeps it from shifting during operation because of the detent in the E4OD. Unfortunately, when I went to the dealer to get a replacement shift tube, Ford told me that it is going to have to be a boneyard part because Ford discontinued it. So I just deal with it because it really hasn't caused me any problems.
