My Check Engine Light came on in my 97 Ranger. The mechanic told me it was my ERG Valve. He told me it needed to be replaced and that it would cost $400. Unfortunately I can't afford that right now. Can my truck survive with out replacing it right away (I have 100,000 miles but now I don't drive more that 100 or so miles week)? My understanding is that it has to do with the emissions system. Is that true? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
That sounds high to me, get a local parts store to pull the codes and let us know what they are. What engine do you have? Are you good at turning a wrench? You should be fine driving it unless its not running normally.
The mechanic gave me the estimate and Code. Code was 7-58H.
He wrote 1 EGR Valve & Gasket $209, ! EDR Sensor $86, and 2 hoses $10, then the $118 for labor. It runs OK has a littel problem with the pick up but that is it. As far as OK with a wrench, I am competent but no Mr. GoodYear.
