[B][COLOR=DarkGreen] Looking for the right intake. Stock just doesn't cut it! Found a AIS and filter for $185.00 and seen prices btw $110.00 and $190.00 for Tymar and accessories.
I have read the threads on each brand of intake. Tymar is cheaper, louder, but the most effective combo of intake volume and filterization. AIS is nippin at Tymar heels in every category. One huge difference. Tymar takes air from the engine compartment, whereas, AIS utilizes fresh air induction. The "Zoodad" trick is a must regardless of choice.
I wonder.... is the AIS or Tymar going to give you decreased EGT's? Which is louder? Which is easier to install? Which is cheapest in the long run? What is the filter life expectancy for either? Which replacement filter is chaepest in the long run? Which one, if either truly, can generate quicker spool up? Is either more effective or less noisy with other mods, ie.. TAG I & II? Mileage benefits of either?
CB, I can't answer all your questions because unfortunately I do not have my gauge kit yet and I have never owned a Tymar. However, I just istalled the AIS in my truck last week and I paid $189.00 from fordpartsnetwork.com. The installation was a piece of cake it came with all the parts needed and the instructions for insatallation were simple and easy to read. I have not tried to price the replacement filters yet but I imagine I will use the same source for them since they seem to be pretty reasonable. Since insatalling the AIS, I have felt a noticiable difference in pick up. I have heard nothing but great things about the Tymar, however, my reasons for going with the AIS were to keep from voiding my 5/100 warranty. I have been pleased with mine so far ,however, my reasons may be diffierent than alot of the others. i believe from what I read you will be happy with either choice of intake. Just my .02
I paid $109 for my Tymar and you can get replacement filters for $19. I change the filter once a year or 15K miles, which ever comes first. I think you have it right, the Tymar is slightly ahead of the AIS. The AIS is fine for people that aren't looking to hop up the power on their truck and will not cause any warranty issues since it is produced by Ford.
New to this mod thing here but I just installed the Tymar (Dale was very
helpful and knowledgeable) and I love it, easy install and love the set up.
The sound is incredible, you can really hear the whistle now, only thing is on a cold day I get cold from riding with the L/F window down so I can hear it.
Got mine shipped to me with an extra filter for $142.00.
just my 2 cents but go with the Tymar, you want be sorry.
CBW,
I went thru this same gig about two months ago. I decided to go with the AIS. But here's my thought.....
They both will basically filter 99.9%. They both will give you slightly lower EGT's because they are much less restrictive than the wonderful stock set up ( ). This is what allows the turbo to spool just a little quicker and also the turbo doesn't have to work as hard to pull in that fresh clean air = lower EGT's and more air than the turbo can push. The Tymar will be louder because it is an open element filter where as the AIS is an enclosed filter. The Tymar will be pulling in warmer air because it sucks air in directly from the engine bay and the AIS takes it's air from inside the grille.. ambient temperatures are cooler than the engine bay temperatures almost always. But hey, that's why the have intercoolers. I believe that the Tymar intake set up is cheaper than the AIS from the get go. I got mine on sale a fordpartsnetwork.com The replacement filters for the Tymar you'll also find to be cheaper. Should run you about $20 give or take and the AIS should be around $65 on EBay. The AIS filter is a more technologically advanced filter - hence it's higher price. You can buy your replacement Tymar filter through Dale or even at your local Napa, can't say the same for the AIS. I know the AIS took about 30 minutes to install... okay okay. I lied. It took me about 40 minutes because my freakin cheap socket fell off the extension underneath the battery. So i had to take the battery back out to get to it. The Tymar should take about the same amount of time from what I've heard. Both filters will last about the same amount of time - one year or 15k is the recommended replacment. Noise with mods.... I'm not sure. I know that when I put my 80hp chip in the turbo spooled more and louder, but that's to be expected with chips/tuners because you're adding more fuel into the intake which generates more boost (thanks Cookie!). The Tymar will always be louder no matter what's done to it. Mileage... I'm sure it went up a little because the air flows better. I didn't do any scientific studies to back that up but I know some of these guys have. You can't go wrong either way. Both give much better filtration. Both give more free flowing air. Do you want the big whistle from the Tymar, or do you want a more stock sounding whine from the AIS? Personally, I like trying to maintain the 'sleeper' effect as much as possible. That way when some chump in a Dodge or Chevy want to run, I'll be to them in my rearview mirror. But the main reason I did the AIS is because it won't void the extended warranty that I have 50k miles left on. Ford won't warranty a truck with a Tymar on it. But by the looks of things, you probably don't have any warranty left on your 99. So you make the call... you'll be happier either way.
Thanks LuLu. I ordered the AIS and went to napa and bought the donaldson copy filter. I bought 3" of 4" straight pipe, a torgue hose clamp and made my own "tymar" for $48.00 bucks. I will be testing both on noise, egt's, turbo spool, power, etc., against the stock junk!
Look for my results by monday.
Good luck with your testing. Either way you'll be 10 times better off. I really don't think that the results, other than noise will be very different. But definitely keep us up to speed!
