My F-350 has always had problems keeping glow plugs working right, im always going through glow plugs, i have even had one completely melted the tip right off of it.... WHY??? all they do is run like a light right?? they ground through the threads, and get positive power fed to them, all it does is heat up.. Am I correct?? How do you test the glow plug controller to see if thats working right? Is it holding them on too long? I am so confused please help...?
Get an ammeter that clips over the battery cable and clip it onto the heavy cable that comes off the glow plug realy. The glow plugs draw about 40 amps each (times 8 is 320 amps). while you are watching the meter, have someone turn the key on and read the meter. If the relay is not working, the amperage draw will be negligible. (The relay may still "click" on but that doesn't mean it is delivering power to the glow plug system.)
Well depending on what year your truck is you may not hear a click, since the trucks 86 and prior use a different type of controller. You may have a bad controler but improper fuel delivery can also damage glow plugs. Let us know a little more info
