question about testing glow plugs

Hey everyone I have a 86 f250 6.9L 360kms

tomorrow I am pulling all the glow plugs to do a compression test and I want to test each glow plug to see if they are good.

the glow plug controller was bypassesed as it doesnt work. the plugs were on a push button. I pulled the button out today as I didnt like the way it was wired.

My question is how do I test each glow plug? I have a multimeter just not sure the proper way to test them.

also how do i test the glow plug relay?

Thanks

James,

Welcome to the forum, but shame on you! You did not READ FIRST! Go to the top of the main Pre-powerstroke page. The top two posts are called stickys and will always be there. This is for good reason. Glow plug issues are far and away the number one newbie question on this site. The second "Sticky" pertains to your 86, and the very last post on page three tells you exactly how to test your GP's, relay, and controller. In the future, try a search for a topic you have and do some reading on the subject before posting a new thread. You cannot possibly have an issue with your truck that hasn't been discussed here dozens or even hundreds of times before. Then if you still need help, post a new thread with clear and consise questions regarding your problem, as well as as much information you can give us about your rig, and even pictures if relevent, or sometimes even if not relevent (we love pictures!). I am not bitching, just trying to school you a little bit. All of us here have learned this the hard way, and some of us haven't learned it at all! LOL. To do a search, go back to the main page, the same one with the stickys, and on the upper right there is a dorp down box that says "search this forum" (right about the height of the first sticky) click on it and type in key words and hit enter. You will get a list of all the threads that contain your keywords. Go through them and look for ones that help, and read, read, read!

Good luck, and enjoy your rig and the forum.

Mac.

You missed it.

Code:
*** Glow Plug Test. ***
Test light test of the glow plugs:
Unplug the Glow Plugs.

Attach one end of a test light to 12v+ battery.
Touch the other end to the terminal on the end of the Glow Plug (where you unplugged the harness)

Does it light up?

Yes, Chances are it's good.

No,

 Replace with Motorcraft/Beru ZD1A for 83-86, ZD9 for 87-94.5.

This test is susceptible to miss diagnoses and should only be used for a quick reference.

To do a positive test use a volt/ohm meter and test the ohms between the terminal and base.

Should be .5 to 1 ohm resistance.
It was there you just missed it. The last line. I wouldn't steer you wrong man.

No big-e we are all in this together. Definitely do the ohm meter test, I have seen bad glow plugs light a test light. The meter test is a sure thing. The test can be done with the plugs installed. One lead to the terminal at the tip of the GP and the other to the engine near the GP
