if i don't get that hydro winch off the totalled tow truck i am gonna see about getting MileMarker 12K or 15k pound winches. I want something i rarely would need a ****** block for except in serious situations.

I'd go with the hydro. They don't over heat. They cost a little more but it's worth it.

from everything i have read the winches themselves are not as expensive but the equipment to hook up hydros is a lil more complicated than electric!

I would go hydro myself, but I'm wondering how many times I'll have to winch when my truck is dead.

i like electric for a few reasons

1. they will run when the truck dies, and i carry extra battery for that reason
2. less complicated to install and run, less to go wrong easy to fix on site (unless the motor completly burns out.

I like both but recently purchased a hydro for a few reasons:

Pulls all day long...motor won't burn up
Pulls faster under load...more work done in shorter time
Two speeds...quick roll up time....more fun time
Will work under water
Less to go wrong...seen lots of burned, broken electrics....never seen a broken hydro (of course a lot less hydros out there)
And the probably the biggest reason....I never had one before and wanted to try something new!
