6.0 maintenance costs

I've been seeing some reports that the maintenance costs for the diesel are higher than a gasser. Is this true? What have you guys been experiencing?

oil costs are higher (12-15 qts). filters are higher. Don't have to change as often though. A diesel properly maintained should see 250,000 or more before major work.

The capability to run the higher mileage is the big savings

I understand the long term benefits, one main reason for me for having a 6.0 on order. Doing the math, the oil change costs should be almost equal to a gasser since you have to change it 3 times to 1 for a diesel. So, that being said, where's all the higher maintenance costs?

Tim, mostly from here. I'm just not sure how "qualified" the statements actually are. Just to quote a few I found:

"If you decide to go gas because of the lower maintenance costs"

"i have no idea how many more miles you'd have to drive to make up for the HUGE maintance ccosts incured with the diesel??"

I thought I had read that from a sponsor also, but can't find it. I should say I've read that most say there isn't an increased cost in maintenance, so I thought I would throw this out here.

Not to provoke someone more to understand why they think that.

You can control the costs by doing the maintainance yourself. I buy filters in bulk, and oil by the case. I just ordered a "6 pack" of oil filters and a "3 pack" of fuel filters for a little over $200.00. I try to find Delo 400 on sale and stock up for several changes. It does cost a little more to change the oil on the diesel, but you CAN ( although I don't) run 7500 miles between changes vs 3000 for the gas engine. I just had to take a 2 day trip to NC, 500 miles each way. I averaged 18 mpg running 75 -80 on the interstate. Fuel costs were about 20 cents per gallon cheaper than regular unleaded, so I can live with the cost of the oil changes.

I work at a NAPA Auto Parts store. I did some figuring and here is the average cost of a diesel and gasser oil change.

Diesel 6.0L PSD = $54.47 for 7500 Miles this is enough for one oil change.

Ford's 5.4L Triton V8 = $58.17 for 7500 Miles this is enough oil and filters for 3 oil changes.

Here are the facts so make your own descisions....................

Now figure in the cost of the extra fuel to run the 5.4L that gets substantially poorer mileage, in most cases.
And you don't have the nice sound either!

I use mobil delvac in my 04 6L...I buy my oil by the barrel from a CAT dealership...pretty good prices and since we have 4 diesels at the house, 2 of which are 6L's it comes in pretty handy...as far as oil filters go, i buy wix filters because they only cost $11 compared to $27 from a ford dealer.

Fuel filters, every 15,000 miles they need replaced and can be done by yourself. Major engine work does not scare me too much because it comes with a 5/100,000 warranty on the engine.
