Flex Fuel Valve Ping

I have been reading the posts from other members about the valve ping or clatter in their 3.0 engines. I have the same problem with my engine. I have a 99 Ranger XLT with the Flex Fuel 3.0 and auto trans. I have cleaned the MAF and this didn't do it. The only thing that helped was running premium gas. I would like to know since this engine is designed to run either ethanol or gasoline if it requires a higher octane gasoline to run properly. I have talked to every person I see in a Ranger to ask them if they have the Flex Fuel engine and I haven't found any. I'm under the impression that the Flex Fuel wasn't a real popular engine.

First, welcome to FTE!!!!

I believe there is a TSB on the 3.0L FFV that calls out to change the coil pack, and PCM to correct a pinging problem.

Ken00 probably has the TSB numbers on this.

I also have a 1999 3.0L FFV, and I had pinging problems with it, when I installed the Motorcraft plug P/N that Ford
is now recommending: AGSF22PP (or AGSF22FMF6). My
owner's manual calls out for AGSF12PP (now AGSF12FMF6)
which is a colder plug, which solved the pinging problem
with the hotter (AGSF22PP) plugs....

So, you may want to check your plugs also....

Unhappy

I think the FFV 3.0L is pretty popular here in TX. I see many Rangers with the leaf looking icon on the tailgate. I sure hope that it doesn't require higher octane gas. Gas prices are rediculous right now.

I see FFV Taurus, Sables & Rangers here in CT, too.

Regarding the 3.0L flex-fuel Vulcan engine, I don't think that they are any more (or any less) prone to pinging than the standard gasoline Vulcan engine.

IMHO, the more people know about what pinging is and what causes it, the better they can service their motors if it becomes a persistent problem. The subject of pinging comes up in the 3.0L V6 Forum fairly often, so I included a section on it in the 3.0L Technical Information & Tips Sticky Thread (scroll down to Section IV - Pinging & Spark Knock).

And a little further down from that is a Section (VI) on FFV's, as well.
