I am a newbie and I need some help. I have a 2000 F250 Super Duty Crew Cab. Are the front wheel bearings serviceable? I can not get the Manual locking hubs cap off. Chiltons book is useless!! Any help or advice would be great.
I found the answer after doing a search. Sorry, should have searched more before posting
I did this job a couple months ago and the help I got off this website was wonderful. I also had bought a nice "Ford" service manual CD off Ebay that had some very helpful drawings. It was only a couple bucks, but it helped a lot.........
I have just replaced my front hub assemblies the lock outs have the ring clip that holds it in place after you get the clip removed I took a rubber mallet tohelp it along but the clip is all that holds it on. as for the service part you are out of luck they are sealed and can only be replaced as an assembly and not seviced and a new o-ring and bolt kit are reccomended highly. I have heard that the after market is working on a serviceable replacement but I have not seen them yet good luck hope this helps
I should have stated that it is a pretty easy job, but pricey. One hub assembly listed for $418 at my local Ford dealer. I shopped at other places and I think NAPA said they could get one, but they didn't have it in stock. Don't remember what the price was at NAPA, but it was only a little cheaper. I finally wound up buying mine at the dealer. After a little dickering, I paid $350 and they didn't charge for the o-ring. I have worked on a couple vehicles that had serviceable bearings. Those costed little, but required a little work to install and repack the new bearings. This new-fangled set-up is easy to replace, but costs a lot more. Guess convenience is expensive.........
Thanks for all the input. RedTaurus94, getting the manual off of ebay is excellant idea. I like to have a good manual to follow if at all possible. Great site, glad I found it.
tmehrkam, my local AZ had no idea what I was talking about when I asked them about the hub assembly. Advanced Auto told me on the phone that they could get them, but when I got there in person, the changed their story and said the part was no longer available. Out of desperation, I stopped by the Ford dealer on my way home from AA and was able to negotiate the good price. I needed the part so I bought it. $75 off list was good enough for me, or at least as good as I thought it was going to get, if you know what I mean.........
wow markup is awful on parts I am buddies with the manager of my local NAPA and got my hub assembly for $160. the mark up on parts is more like buying jewelry for my wife I guess I expect it from the jewelry store but when you spend 30k to 50k for a truck you should be able to get a good price on parts oh well gas is to high also welcome to america land of the "free" I will buy my buddy a case of beer tomorrow just because he has saved me a fortune.
