I need more pulling POWER

What can I do to my 1991 F-250 7.3 to get more power. Try to find a good sounding muffler and still get the power.

How much power do you want to get? Changing the intake filter to increase the air for combustion and muffler to a free flow muffler and even a larger exhaust system will only get a little bit of power. The best way to get more power out of a naturally aspirated diesel is to add a turbocharger. Turning up the fuel will only get you black smoke and probably burned pistons. If you go for more power, be sure to install a pyrometer so you can keep an eye on the heat inside the cylinders. Hope this helps a little.

Turbo or non turbo?
If you are doing the muffler, redo the whole exhaust, 3" for non-turbo, 4" for turbo. Get a good flow through muffler.
This is a start. Should grab you around 20 to 30 more ponies. Enjoy.

turbo spool your engine with 6-8 lbs of boost, lower your gear ratio a notch 4"exhaust all the way back with a flowmaster muffler (single exhaust line) and you will be delighted with what you find , all is relatively cheap. Loof at the Banks turbo systems. Good luck

Flowmasters are over rated and over priced. Just go with a 3-1/2" Cherrybomb ($20-30). Mine sounds just right. Not too loud, but a nice, deep growl when going thru tunnels

7.3 ATS turbo and T19 4speed with 3.55's and 33" tires
The turbo is pushing 15 pounds of boost and has three inch exhaust stacks.
I can easily drag more than I can scale with 20,000 pound plates in the WVa mountains.

You don't want the HP you want the torque the turbo will give you.

The K&N filter and three inch exhaust will add to the torque more than it does the HP figures.
Do you have a soup bowl on your air cleaner lid?
If you have one, cut it off the bottom of the lid, this will help you also.

If you don't want the cost of a turbo system then try a Banks Stinger intake and exhaust system it is supposed to give 38 HP and 40 ft lbs of torque. You can get them at The Rev Shop in Santa Clarita CA. They sell for $749.00 including shipping and if you go to the web site you will be able to get a 5% discount on the system. Free shipping is worth a fair amount also. If you mated this up to a Stans Header you may well see 50 hp for about 1200.00 which is pretty decent. You could also turn your fuel up a little with that.

I have cut the soup bowl off, I cut the stock muffler off and it is straight pipe right now but sound like a glasspack don't like it. Going to get a K&N this week. Thinking about putting a Flowmaster on it next. How do you run the 3" exhaust with out running dual exhaust don't want duals. THANKS

Your factory Y pipe should if i remember be 3 inch out. single 3 in with a single 3 out muffler. run it out the side.

Cut the Y pipe to the left cylinder bank as close to the right bank pipe as you can.
Cut the right bank pipe just in front of where the left bank drops in.
Start installing the three inch pipe at the right bank pipe end.
Cut a hole in the side of the three inch pipe to drop the left bank in the side of it.
Trim the left bank as needed to get it to connect.
Go about one foot and install a free flowing muffler, three inch in and out.
Mig weld everything together and high temp paint all the welds
Depending on the local laws where you are, either run the pipe in the original location, or dump it out the side in front of the right rear tire.
The shorter and straighter the better.

This way if you do put the turbo on later you will already have the pipe where it goes and it will be the right size.

A couple of 2.5" short nipples make it easier to go from 2.25 to 3 inch pipe.
