Or if you want to stay with the V6, go with either a Holley 350cfm 2-barrel or an Offenhauser 4-barrel manifold with a 390cfm 4-barrel. Some folks are using the factory headers from an Aerostar. And if your truck is a 83-85 Ranger or Bronco II, you could replace the EEC-IV system & TFI distributor with an earlier DuraSpark ignition from a late '70s Pinto or Mustang II. Or Mallory makes a dual spark distributor for the 2.8l.
It all depends on what you want to do with it.
Oops, I missed seeing that you're in California. What I said above would probably cause you to fail an emissions inspection as would the V8 conversion. I guess you could always move to less strigent state
