I have a 76 highboy and the previous owner replaced the tranny/transfer with a 2x4 unit. I want 4x4 back but I want something to handle more power (500hp) and 49" tires. It is an auto and I would like to keep it that way. What would you use if you had about $2500?
If you want to keep an auto (i have no idea why you would), build a C6 or an E4OD(with a stand alone controller). They are both stout units stock, and but for 500hp, they'd need some money put into them.
As for holding 500 HP out of the box look at the NP 435 (my preference) or the BW T-18. Both mnuals, but for brute strength you can't beat them. The 435 was used in 700 series dump trucks, so that has to say something for it .
As for the recommedation on the atlas II, i think I'd pass on it. atlas recomends not using their cases in a fullsize that will see alot of abuse. I'd go with the NP205, all cast iron, all gear driven, bullet proof, cheap. It has an anemic low range of 1.96:1, but you won't notice that if you go with one of the manuals. they both have sub-6:1 1st gears (6.32 on the 18, 6.696 on the 435). If you need deeper gearing you can do an NP203 based doubler infront of the 205 for a 4:1 low range and a 2:1 intermediate low range. All ford cases have the "1 ton" 32 spline outputs and the matching heavy bearings, so you can't go wrong on that part. They also all have the same bolt pattern and input spline so any fullsize case will bolt to any fullsize tranny.
I would love to have a stick but my truck always has been an auto. I don't know if the bennefit(sp?) of the np435 would be worth trying to put the extra peddles and stuff in a truck that had auto from the start. That is why I wanted an others opion. I have a C6 2x4 tranny in it now and it is great but my motor is only 325hp so far. When the motor is done I hope to have 500 hp. I want the tranny done the first time not upgraded every time I reach a different power level. I'm gonna do some research on the atlas since I read about a truck in some mag that had one. Thanks for the advice. Anyone else have anything they would like to add?
