engine swaps help
Ok i just bought a 76 f-150 4x4 shortbed. No motor or tranny/transfer case. I've also got a 78 f-150 custom 2 wheel drive with a 400 and a 4 speed manual. Can my the 400 from my 78 mount in the 76? Will i have to move the steering box in the 76? It sits a lot further forward. The 76 4x4 had a 390 with a c6. Did the 400 come in the 76 f-150? Any help on this subject would be great. I have a lot more questions but I'll start here for now.

71 views and NO help dang...that is a ton of question in those 2 1/2 sentences. Lets see if I can help any.

400 in the 2wd should have a front sump oil pan and it should drop tright in the 76? But you might want to swap to a rear sump pan. Depends on the lift on the 4wd you can smack a pan with the front pumpkin, if you are wheeling the hell out of it.
You trans is a 4 spd 2wd so you need a transfer case adapter. Get it from a JY, look for a 4wd 4 spd truck and then a xfer case "NP 205" (gear to gear drive) and cross member, and you should need different length rear d/s too.
If you can find that set up in a JY rig (4 spd and xfer case) just get it all. And cross members and d/s.
Will I have to move the steering box in the 76? I would think not.
I would think the 76 came with a 360, but maybe the 400, decode the vin. Hope this gets helps you get going in the right direction.

Can the 400 from the '78 fit into the '76?
Well, sure I dont see why not. As stated above check oil pan clearances. My '78 is 2wd and came with a 400 and had a REAR sump oil pan on it. However, the 351M I bought out of a '78 4x4 has the side sump pan on it. (ya know...the one that kinda straddles the axle...not sure the technical name for it.) Either way, Id swap oil pans to avoid clearance issues.
As for the trans, yeah youre going to need the adapter and by far the easiest way to get it is at the JY. As far as the rest of the tranny swap goes, you'll need to swap steering columns (auto to manual) and add the clutch pedal and all that stuff out of your donor truck. Not impossible, but it takes a bit of work.
Did a 400 ever come in a 76? I dont believe so. To the best of my knowledge, the 400 was introduced in 78.
