axle grindin

on my 77 with a dana 44 front im having a prob. when ever my hubs are locked in i get a grindin noise occasionally when im slowing down in 2wd. At first i just figured it was the R&P going out but i would think it would do it all the time not just every once in a while? What do u guys think it would be? im gonna pop off the font cover when i get a chance but was lookin for guesses first for things to check out. i cant tell where exactly the noise is coming from but it will vibrate the whole truck when it does it.

Since you mentioned the vibration, I'd look at the front drive shaft for the source of the noise and the vibes. You have the hubs locked and the truck is in 2WD, if there is any slop in the drive shaft it will be more pronounced with no torque pressure being applied to the shaft. If there are any worn joints the shaft will be flopping around freely. If you are still unsure, you can always remove the front shaft, go for a test drive and see if the conditions still persists.
