Hell, i wouldn't rent from them. During peiods of high demand if a truck needsregulr service, the truck oes to the U-Haul service center, gets the sticker slapped on it, and sent back out qithout a second look.
Also, if you rent a "local" truck watch out. Those are the ones u-haul is getting ready to retire since their such big POSes. The one at the shop i work at dropped a rod friday night and this weekend alone we had two pull into our lot with the brakes out.
I found this amusing, myself. A friend was in our local UHaul, having a hitch installed (lazy sob), and I look up on the wall. There, in their own signage, advertising one of their tag-along trailers, is an Exploder towing it. I asked the guy about the new policy, he confirmed it, laughed at the sign once I pointed it out, and told me "The company will send us new signs soon."
I asked him why they still had no problem installing hitches on Explorers (they had one on the lift at the time), but wouldn't let them tow.... He had no answer, of course, but it was fun to point out the hypocracy.
I watched an interesting test on TV a while back. They attached a device at each wheel of an Explorer (a used model purchased off a lot and not test prepared in any way) that allowed them to dump out all the air remotely. With a pro driver on a closed course, they dumped air randomly on all four corners at 40, 60 and 70 mph. In every case, the Explorer tracked straight and was controllable. Finally the driver did a hands-off safe stop at 60 with no problems. It appeared by this test that the Explorer got a bad rap.
The key here is "pro driver"!
The real problem was untrained drivers fighting the wheel when a tire blew instead of remembering the driver's ed training they may or may not have recieved in our schools...
I dragged one of those POS auto transport trailers out here from CT. That thing was the biggest piece I have ever seen. The ramps had rust holes through them. The wireing on the right side was completely ripped out (but the dealer said my light check was ok), it had one new tire, and the other three were almost to cords. Until I hit Somewhere around Michigan, it had no brakes. From the western side of Idaho, all the way here, the brakes dragged. The only thing that it had going was that it tracked fairly straight. It was kinda fun getting the thing to fishtail, though. Especially at 2 and 3 in the morning going through a construction zone, with those skinny orange poles that just bend over. What are those worth, about 10 points each?
I stopped any thought of using U-Haul products about a decade and half ago. They installed a hitch to the back of my late fathers RV so he could tow a Honda Civic. They also welded bolts for the towing rig to hook into on the Civic. I looked at the work and begged him not to drive on it. I was amazed when I found he made it from Miami, Florida to Rabun County, Georgia (I thought he wouldn't make it to the end of the block) before the Civic broke loose and ended up in the middle of an antique store at 1am. The Civic actually passed him at one point as he heard a noise and pulled over to see what had happened. Bottom line they welded the connector for the towing bar right into a piece of sheet steel on the Civic and it ripped loose, bringing with it a healthy chunk of Japanese unibody construction. Amazingly when the law suits began to fly my father was in the clear. I guess U-Haul had deeper pockets that we did! Their level of incompetence was shocking. My father came from that generation that believed that everyone knew their job and was doing as best as they could....I am no way as naive as he!
