Question flywheel help

I have just purchased a 65 f100. It needs a starter and ring gear.
It is a three speed and a 240 engine. I pulled flywheel today and went to the parts store. The book calls for a 164 or 183 tooth ring gear for both 240 or 300 engine. The one i pulled off of truck is a 168 tooth ring gear. Can anyone tell me what is going on?
I took new ring gear and held it up to new starter drive and it looks like they mesh up fine, but would hate to have to put it all together and it not work then have to tear down again.
Thanks for any help you all can give.

Wes

Wes,

It sounds like someone stuck a 289 flywheel on it. I think a 164 & a 183 tooth gear will both mesh fine, but anything in-between will not due to tooth pitch. FoMoCo does not make 145 tooth or 202 teeth but they would mesh ok as long as the starter was a reasonable distance from the center of the flywheel, (like out farther/ more for the 202teeth or in more/ closer for a145 tooth. 19 is the tessilation or the mathematical repeat for the right pitch, 168 is not that's why it needs both a ring gear and starter/ starter drive.

It's what happens when stuff "fits" like in terms of bolting up, but doesn't work because it doesn't fit in terms of meshing, intergrating, or working in the system. . . . THe "PVO" would have gotten away with the 289 flywheel if he put a 289 starter in it. Or if he'd put a 289 starter drive on his 240 starter, but he wasn't "hip" enough to figure that out, OR whoever gave him the info he could use the 289 168 tooth wheel didn't know or didn't bother to tell him that, or tell him he needed to match it, or else it would tear up like it did.

Thanks FBp for the help. I just didnt want to go thru all the work and have something mess up and have added expence. Talked with pvo and he said his dad replaced clutch and pressure plate last summer and that he did change flywheel due to hot spots and cracking on original one. He told me that they had other engine parts laying around,ie a 289 and a 302 that they got flywheel from. I think while i am in there i will change pilot bearing and throwout just for piece of mind. Also will get flywheel turned.
One good thing about this is when i called the guy, he said if i wanted the 289 and 302 engines i could have them. All i have to do is go pick them up. Both ran when pulled.
Thank you for your help.

Thumbs up Glad to help Wes. . . .

Yeah Man Sure, Glad to help!

I skipped reply in Slicks 'cause I'd already put it here, don't think I was avoiding you ofver there Wes. . . . I figured you'd find this reply,

As for the SB Windsors, you haven't gotten them yet? If that 289 is 66 or later both it & 302 will bolt in using the stanchions of the 240 I-6, I think.
It's just a matter of insulators (aka engine mounts).

Later FBp
