Go for the powerstroke. I have driven both and in my opinion there is no choice. I love mine even if the service is more money.

I'm not sure, but a PSD rarely ever breaksdown if it ever does. I've had mine for about 2 or three years with 77,000 miles and I've only had one problem with it. The only thing that ever went wrong with it was the GPR (glow plug relay) the day after I bought it (these trucks are man-made). But it was fixed under warranty and I haven't had a problem since. Besides one thing that diesel engines have over gas engines that they require less maintenance. They don't have to be maintained as often as a gas engine. So unless you don't ever do the little maintenance the engine requires, you won't have any problems whatsoever.

The CMP Sensor is another common problem. Under $100 if you buy it from International. With 260K miles on a truck though and not knowing the exact history of the engine it might need to be rebuilt now or in the near future. A 1 owner truck that makes it to 260K has probably been treated very well and won't need a rebuild.

Cowboy,

Sounds like your looking at used trucks, I would go with the truck i can pay off the fastest. Problem with used trucks their going to break down in some point, trust me you don't want to be trying to make a payments and pay for repairs at the same time. I would get a comperssion test done on any used truck that i'm looking at buying. If it is PS or an IDI that has a turbo (check out the turbo they can get real spendy to replace.) I have owned both, pesonaly i love the IDI because it dosen't have all electrical B.S like the power stoke has. It might not have the power, but i don't to many grades that i would like to break over the top at 80mph pulling a trailer loaded down with horses. Its always easier to trade a truck in too being paid off. My first truck that i ever had was a 84 ford 6.9. Finally sold it last year with about 450,000 miles on it . Only things i had to replace on it was injector pump, glow plug sensor, breaks, and a front end. i also owned a 90 ford with a 7.3 it was a great truck but i traded it off for my 95 PS which i had some problems due to the Intake on my air filter, because some oil changer didn't get it sealed right and it took my turbo out and stuck a couple valves before i knew it. So I slamed a 97 engine in it and it has run fine ever since. I like the cummings engine also, but i think the ford has better front ends in their trucks. i have seen guys take those old 6.9 and 7.3 build truck that out pull any power stroke too.

Yeah you kind of confrm my feelings. I think for righ now I'm looking for a good solid IDI, I'm not a hot rodder, I need a truck that can work. "iknow the PSD can do that" but i dont drive 75 wiht a load any way. seem like a good way to kill my horses, Just had a friend who was halling too fast and jack-knifed her truck 03 2500 ram 6sp came up ove a hill and hit ice, My thoughs are why pay more way more when ican get an older one that can do the same job just as well. bbut watch I'll go out tomarrow a nd drive back some nice PSD, just to prove myself wrong. J. ps what do you check on the turbo???

you have to pull the intake hose off and look at the fins on the turbo, you can tell real fast, if those fins look brand new and shiney like some took sand blaster to them thats a bad sing. they should probally look grey and dull with maybe an oily film
