My almost brother in law has a 93 IDI, and it's ok. From a reliability standpoint it is a great truck, and he really never had a problem with it at all until he met me. My PSD makes almost 200 more horsepower, fully double the torque, and gets about 2mpg better milage. Now he's hunting a turbo kit. There are only three kits I'm aware of, they run between $1900-2400, so you could factor that in to the cost of the 89.
Obviously my truck is a long way from stock, and his is very stock, so it is not a fair comparison, but my I had the same advantages when I was stock, just not as drastic.
I don't think there is a thing wrong with the IDI's except they are one dimensional- you turn it on, you pull something, you turn it off. Throttle response is a non issue because there simply isn't any.
I certainly am not qualified to tell you how to spend your money, but if you can find a way to aquire the cherry 97, I think that would be the way to go.
I have to agree on that Cherry '97. It has the capacity to serve you better in the long run. It also has plenty of room for power expansion, if need be. If you check out signatures as well as a few threads, anyone who owns a '97 loves their truck. But you should always buy what you can afford.

Cost of maintenance is a major difference. Every thing on the PSD cost more money. Service tech's are hard to find. The EOAD auto transmission is the weak link, you can bullitproof it but $$$ again. The manual tranny is tough and troble free, but the weak link there is the clutch. The two piece flywheel is expensive and must be done right. If you want a good truck that will give you miles and miles and little or no maintenance, than go IDI with 5 SPD. If you want lots of power and you don't mind throwing money at your truck buy a used PSD. For convincing just check the theory of operation of the PSD, if that doesn't tell you, nothing will. The old addage "Keep it simple stupid" does not apply to the PSD. Now saying that, once you have a PSD, go gotta love it. I own one of both, IDI and PSD.
Well as it turns out it looks like some one just bought the IDI out from under my feet. I work on the weekends and when I got back it was gone, oh well.

I tink that was some sort of sign. BUY THE POWERSTROKE!
You guys are way too nice, But I'm still looking around I was thinking I f I can get an idi to last me 10 years just thnk of the PSD that couls be out then!!! or who knows what else , I was thinking tit could be a sign too though, I 'll keep my eyes open. the rig wil come to me, J/
I love my 1997 and have thought it would be great to guy a new truck, but there's 1 problem, my truck still runs great at 160K miles. I'm going to keep it until at least 250K.
You were right! what would you all thinks of a nice clean 96 with 260K for $ 7500 Is that too many miles to take a chance on a used PSD?? I know Iver heard of them running to 400K but It seems to me that is ualy wig=th one owner. I just saw it today, It's not the only one I'm looking at. but it dose not seem like it's in bad shape. Auto though,
Thats what the bummer is about the that I miseed IDI it had the 5Pd.
I wouldn't buy a used PSD with that kind of mileage without planning on putting money into it. I would, however, own a PSD past 260K miles. Have you checked out autotrader? What's your budget?
I would be a little leary of a truck with that many miles unless you know everysingle thing that truck has been through. Scheduled maintanance everytime, on time. Was it used as a work truck, did it tow heavy loads a lot, was it raced, wrecked, You see what I am getting at?
That was my gut feeling about it. It had a goose neck hitch in the back too bad sign. it seemed like a lot fo miles and to much to just be putting in a new engine when if I wanted to spend that kind of cash, I could get one with a lot less mi.J
