WEll I know this is the PSD site but I want all the info from all the minds out there. I'm looking for a truck to pull my horse trailer. I'm looking at 89 IDI and some older PSD. I dont need a huge amout of HP, The thnigs that matter to me are . reliability, Mant cost, Inital cost, and MPG, The IDI I'm looking at is running at under $4k and for a psd I dont think I could not spend much over$10k but it depends on how nice the rig was. But thats about the range . So what do yal Think. I heard that the IDI are cheper and easier to mant. why is that? Thaks folks J.

You really cannot go wrong with either truck. Both are very reliable and very proven with time. My fire Dept purchases the IDI because maint. and repairs are cheaper, But these trucks (ambulances) really take a beating. Cold starts on the gas hard and on the brakes etc. Day in and day out abuse. But they keep on going for years and years. When we are done with them they get re furbished and used by other depts. with small budgets for many more years of abuse.
But if you are gonna be pulling heavy loads etc. You cannot beat the power and throttle response of the PSD. Yeah you are paying a bit more but for a personally owned truck it sure is worth it. I know I really haven't given you a straight answer, but that is a decision you need to weigh out. You will be right either way though.
Well If I had it all sorterd out I would not have had to ask ether. Thanks for the in for.I just found a cherry 97 not far from here. Nice looking truck, but I'm not the worlds welthiest man, I'm glad to hear you think both are good. so realy I cant go wrong. do you know which gets better mpg? J.
The PSD gets better fuel economy. It is able to force more air into the cylinder head creating greater pressure for better and more complete fuel combustion, thuse more power less fuel. Also more response to the gas pedal. And I realize if you had the answers you would not have asked the question. What I was refering to is that you and only you can decide on the answer to more power = more money or can you be ok with pulling a trailer and being passed by other trucks pulling heavier loads? You will still get there only a little slower.
Is the 97 a PSD? I am guessing yes. Hey I hear you I am not a rich man either but my theory is "If I am gonna make payments on a truck then I am damn sure gonna make payments on the one I want" with that said I did save for a long time in order to have a low intrest rate.
Yeah I knew what you meant about I would have to be the one to make the choice, I was not trying to be a smart a$$. But is some times hard to get all that meaning and inflection in to just text.
Yeah is' a PSD I have not found out if it's a auto or stick yet. I realy would like a stick I t's ncie to beable to chose what gear when I m ceeping on back roads with a big trailer. Plus I.ve never owned any tinhg else. I'm not sure what I would end up doing with my righ hand. The other thing is if I buy the IDI my insueranc gos down by $200 A YEAR. thas a nice bit of change. coupled with better fuel economy than my f-150.
No I didnt take your post as a smart *** comment. Thats no Problem. I thought maybe I wasn't clear enough sorry. Yes the stick is much better for towing. I tow a 33 ft fifth wheel when I do that I wish mine was a stick too. But its not that big o deal. And it sure is nice to have that free right hand on long trips with the misses to stroke her hair when.... nevermind. She just really likes my truck.
Something I forgot. I know money can be an issue but a small expense that has payed for itself over and over again. I put air bags on my truck with an on board compressor. It keeps the truck level when I load the trailer on it. Which means no sag and better handling. and a nice air ride all the time. Momma likes that too!
Air bags are a great thought. MY Girl Likes trucks as much as I do. In fact she might do even more towing than I do. And dam you should see her back a 20' goose neck!! We oggle trucks when ever we go any where. And in Wy, There are a lot of trucks. well maybe not that many more than any where else. but there are not a lot of cars to get in the way. I think she would like a newer truck but She will have to wait till she gets out of school, I dont think I can pay for tow trucks.
I had another question, If I got the Idi, would an after market turbo bust MPG? to colse to the PSD Thaks Rooster
I am sure it would but now your getting into a relm I don t know the how to on. I could not tell you how to do it or the cost of doing such a mod. Sorry. Maybe that is a thread you could start. I am sure there are a lot of wrenchers in here that could give you the pros cons and where to start for info.
All diesels since 1995 were PSD's. 1994 was the last year you could get an IDI in both a turbo and n/a as well as the first PSD. Here's an engine comparison from the 3 engines available in 1994:
The IDI is cheaper to maintain but the PSD will give you more power and better acceleration. All modern engines use more technology which usually translates into better performance and more costly repairs when there are problems. Personally, I would recommend the PSD. There are plenty of used PSD's on the market. Check out autotrader and see if you can find one of the early PSD's for a reasonable price.
