Just curious on my options for replacing the 4.2L V6 on my 1998 f150 supercab. It is burning oil pretty good. I heard this was an expensive engine. (reman) I was wondering what other engines I might be able to put in it with out changing to much in it. Like a 4.9L? I don't have alot of money I can stick into it, but would love to get a V8 in it if I could. Any help/suggetions would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.
Forgot to mention, the V6 has 195,000 miles on it.

Unfortunately there isn't anything else that will swap in easily. The 4.6 and 5.4 V8's which came in these trucks use a different transmission, all the accessories such as the A/C compressor, P/S pump etc are different, the wiring is different etc etc.
If you could find a complete donor truck (i.e. insurance write off) that would be the easiest way to do the swap.
Have you priced out reman engines? How about a good used low mile engine out of a wreck? If you go with a used engine I would look for a later model one or if you cant find a late one I would replace the head gaskets and timing cover gaskets before I installed it so you don't have to do that later.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have done some pricing on Jasper engines. I heard they are better then a remanufactured ford. It is a little pricey though, $2495, but i heard their warranty is unmatched. Has anyone ever installed a Jasper and if so what are your thoughts on them? I only paid $2000 for my 98' F150 supercab. I bought it off of ebay. She burns a little oil so a reman is in her future. And thanks for your input RacerGuy!!
i replaced the 4.2 v6 in my 97 f150. it was a bit of a project without a lift. although the wire harness was the biggest problem. i purchased the engine from a company in texas. it cost $1750 including freight to ny with a $350 core return. i had absolutely no problems bolting it up and it runs great. id be glad to answer any questions.
Gene I'm not convinced that a Jasper would be better than a Ford reman although from what I've heard they are better than most other rebuilts.
Ford Reman standards are pretty high and they will use any updated parts that Ford may have come out with since the engine was originally built. You also get Ford warranty on it which would be good at any dealer.
the name of the company is power pro.http://www.powerpro2000.com i did most of the work in my spare time (aprox. 24 hours ) so i really took my time. you definately need help if you are going to try and take the engine out from the top. i stripped the whole thing down before i removed it. make sure to label everything!
